常に世界の自然科学の最先端の話題を取り上げて新作を疲労してくれるマイケル・クライトンの今回の作品は「遺伝子操作、組換え」がテーマです。いつも通り、入念な調査、準備を下敷きにして遺伝子を巡る世界の研究開発と産業界で巻き起こる凄まじい競争の実態を丹念に、しかし分かりやすく描き上げてくれました。専門用語が大変ではありますが（それは彼の作品すべてがそうなのだから仕方ありません）、読みやすい平明で無駄のない文章、簡潔でスピーディなストーリー展開、視覚的なイメージの明瞭さはいつもの通り。そして、人間の欲望が生み出す俗世間のドラマにしながら、作者マイケルから世界の読者への熱く強いメッセージが込められているところも、全く以っていつも通り。その点でファンには期待通りの作品になっていると言っていいでしょう。
「遺伝子」とは何なのか、人間存在とは遺伝子のみで決められてしまうものなのか、そこに操作を加えることは「神の意思」に反することではないのか、さまざまなテーマが作中の出来事や登場人物の言葉によって語られます。しかし、同時に「節度」というものを知らない登場人物達の欲望が、人間ではない何かの遺伝子にちょっとした操作を加えてしまい…。
世界各地で起こる一つ一つのエピソードがやがてチェイスに変わり、アメリカの一つの町へと収斂して行きます。痛快過ぎるチンプ君の大活躍や、読者まで頭が割れそうになって来るオウム君の叫び声やとハラハラドキドキが続いて、最後にはジョングリシャムも真っ青と言っていいような判事さんの胸のすくような裁定が下ります。
ラストシーンは確かに含蓄に富んでいるけど、でもこの大作の結びにしてはちょっとあっけないかな。ということで星四つでした。

　将来大きな倫理的議論を巻き起こすことになるであろう、しかしその進歩を避けたり、妨げたりすることのできない、人間の遺伝子組み換えという禁断の科学を、幾つかの事例を挙げながら大胆な発想の下にまとめた物語である。
　この本を読んで、特殊な抗癌組織を持つ人が、その組織が世の中の人々のために役立つならば、組織の提供を拒むことが出来ない、という法律がアメリカには存在することを初めて知った（日本でもそうなのかもしれないが）。この本を読んでいる丁度その時に、同じような話が今インドネシアの鳥インフルエンザのＷＨＯへの病理的資料の提供についても言われている。インドネシアは世界で有数の鳥インフルエンザの感染地であるが、そこから提供された生体組織や菌などでワクチンが作られても、特にインドネシア国民がワクチンを低価格で買えるとか、見返りのお金をもらえるとかの恩恵を受けることはないのだそうだ。
　一方で著者は、金銭的な授与については特に言及してはいないが、少なくともその組織の用途や受容者の選択権については提供者の主張や権利が認められるべきではないか、と述べている。読むにつれて、なるほど著者はそういうこと書きたかったのかということが分かり、一般人である私としては大いに同意するものである。
　そのような信念はおおいに尊重するものであるが、この本は遺伝子の組み換えで将来どんなことが起きるのかが、著者一流の卓越した発想でおもしろく、読みやすく書かれていて、決して退屈することはなかった。

最初から半分程度までは、遺伝子の取り扱い等問題提起し、どう展開していくか楽しみな所があったが、後半は到達する場所が明確にあるわけでもないためか、あるいは作者自身はっきり決めていないかなにかはっきりした態度がないまま終わった感じがしました。私自身遺伝子に関する研究はすべきではないと、思いますので、消化不良になったのかもしれません。
現在の遺伝子研究に問題投げかけたことは評価出来ると思います。その後の事はある意味私たち自身の問題なので、読んでから自分の意見を構築出来たらと思います。
