この特別なリンゴの木を「Giving Tree（寛大な木）」としか呼ばないのはいささか控えめすぎる。簡潔な表現とシンプルな線描画で人気のシェル・シルヴァスタインによるこの作品では、1本の木がまず、1人のやんちゃな少年に緑あふれる遊び場を与える存在になり、やがて心地よい木陰やおいしいリンゴを与える様子を描いていく。少年を喜ばせることがこの木の喜びだったが、少年の願いをかなえるためにこの木が払う代償はしだいに大きくなっていく。少年が「お金が欲しい」と言えば、寛大な木は自分のリンゴを売ってはどうかと提案し、「家が欲しい」と言えば、材木として自分の枝を切ってはどうかと提案する。やがて成長した少年は、木と遊ぶには大きくなりすぎたから代わりにボートが欲しい、とねだる。寛大な木は、自分を根元から切り倒せばその幹でボートを作ることができるだろう、と提案する。そして少年は無分別にもこの木を切り倒してしまう。ここで本書はページ見開きで、痛ましい、孤独な姿の切り株を、少年がかつて「M.E. + T（ぼくと木）」と刻んだ根元までばっさりと切られた切り株を、ぽつんと描いている。…「そして木はしあわせだった…でもそれはほんとかな？」
このようにして寛大な木はすべてを捧げ尽くしたが、やがてかつての少年は老人となって、腰を下ろして休める静かな場所を求めて戻ってくる。木はやはり自分の精一杯でもてなそうと、自分の上に腰掛けて休むように促す。老人は自分がかつて切り倒した切り株の上に腰掛ける…「そして、木はしあわせだった」
本書のメッセージは明確にされていない。「もらえるものはもらい尽くせ」だろうか？「捧げられるものは捧げ尽くせ」なのか？はたまた「完全なる自己犠牲は素晴らしい精神だ」か？あるいは、「完全なる自己犠牲ほど哀れなものはない」だろうか？…シルヴァスタインは「寛大にも」読者の手にあえて、解釈をゆだねてくれたとみえる。

少年が小さいころからいつも近くにある大きな木。少年は木登りやかくれんぼで遊び、木の実を食べ、木のことが大好きだ。木もとても幸せだった。
少年が成長すると、もっと大事な人や物ができて木との距離が広がりはじめる。迷ったときや困ったとき、都合のよいときにだけ木を頼ってやってくる身勝手な少年。それなのに木は、たわわに実った実を持っていけ、枝を刈って家を作ればいい、太い幹を切り倒して舟を作ればいいと無償の愛を注ぎ続ける。そんな木の姿から、生きていく上で一番大切なことを教えられる。
日本語では「木」と訳されているが、原書は「her=彼女」と女性名詞になっている。どっしりと揺るぎない、母性的な愛情が感じられる。(か)

私は中学の英語の教科書でこの物語と出会いました。
英語の先生が「愛」について語ってくれたことがとても印象に残っています。
私にはこの「木」が「母」と重なって見えました。
幼い頃からずーっと見守りつづけてくれている。
どんなことがあっても決して見捨てたりしない。
我が身を削ってその子に尽くす。
でもそれは何よりの喜び。

そんな「母」になりたいという思いを抱きつつ年を重ねた私は今
ひとつの命を宿しています。
母親になる前に Giving Tree と出会えてよかった。

「涙が止まりません」・・・・このコピーは嘘ではありませんでした。本屋さんで立ち読みしていたのに涙があふれてきました。娘に読んできかせるのに最後の頁が声に出せませんでした。確かに感動しない人もいるかもしれません。でも、この本は多くの人の心の中に真っ直ぐに入ってくることでしょう・・・
僕の宝物が１冊増えました。

初めて「大きな木」と出会ったのは中学生の頃。淡々とした語り口、最後のページに近づくにつれ、瞳いっぱいに涙が溢れたことを覚えている。「無償の愛」、当時の私は与えられる立場だったように思う。社会に出て数年経ち、ある日本屋で懐かしさのあまり再び手にした「大きな木」。少年を自分自身、木を親に置き換えて再読すると、新たな感動に目頭が熱くなった。児童虐待が度々報じられる昨今、疲れきった大人が多いように思う。けれど忘れないでほしい、誰しも「無償の愛」を誰かから与えられ、今があることを。そして、誰かを許すことの尊さを。見返りのない愛の深さを。この本は出会う時期が早くても遅くても、間違いなく心の財産となる。人生の回帰点となる世代を超えた名作だ。

深い…深すぎる。中盤以降色々と考えさせられながら読んだ。絵本の中では名作の部類に入ると思う。おおきな木の献身的で健気な愛と、人間の一生を切なく表現した作品。
