The Lord of the Rings(以下、LotR) 50周年記念版ハードカバー3巻本と、
"The Lord of the Rings A Reader's Companion"(LotRのテキストの変遷や解説等が
詳細に書かれた貴重な内容満載の注釈巻です）の4冊を、光沢のあるオレンジで
絵と文字がデザインされた黒基調のクールな外観の筺に納められるボックスセット。
各巻の装丁はトールキンによるデザインがよく再現されてありとても良い感じで、
凄く気に入ってます。
LotR 50周年記念版では、それまで出版されたものより、より正確なテキストとするべく、
Wayne G. Hammond とChristina Scull が校訂を行っており、徹底的にテキストを
見直し多数の訂正・変更が行われていたり、出版技術、コスト等の関係で初版出版
当時実現できなかった、折込地図とトールキン自身によるマザルブルの書のカラー絵の
挿入、指輪に浮き上がる火文字を赤インクにするなどが実現されていて、全体にトール
キン本来の意図に沿うよう作られています。尚、50周年記念版は2004年にも1巻本で
出版されていますが、本ボックスセットの2005年出版の3巻本は、2004年版において校訂で
見落とされてた箇所や新たに混入していたエラー等の改訂が行われていたり、Index が
見直され再編集された新しいものになっています。
これら良い特徴を持つ50周年記念版ですし、3巻本各巻がハードカバーとしては比較的
扱いやすいサイズですから、ハードカバーでLotR 原書を読みたいと思ったときの、
現時点では最良の選択のひとつだと思いました。LotR 原書は何種類か持っていましたし、
価格もそこそこしましたが、購入した価値は十分あったと満足しているので、星５つです。
