U・N・オーエンと名乗る人物から無償でインディアン島に招待された10人の男女。晩餐時にテーブルに集まった彼らの耳に突然レコードの音声が流れる。その音声は、招待客たちの秘められた犯罪の秘密を１人１人暴き立てるのだった。そして晩餐時に第１の殺人が起こる。その殺人は、部屋にかかっている額縁のなかに書かれたマザーグースになぞらえていた。テーブルの上に飾られていた10人のインディアンが１人姿を消すと共に、１人、また１人と犠牲者が増えていく。・・・

マザーグースの歌詞通りに進められていく殺人事件。10人それぞれの闇に葬られていたはずの暗い過去。次に殺されるのは誰か。そして犯人は誰なのか。緊張感高まる文体にぞくり、ぞくりと静かな恐怖感を掻き立てられました。殺人の描写よりだんだんお互いが犯人ではないかと疑い始め、本能をむき出しにしていく人々の描写が何より恐ろしく感じました。人間の奥底に潜む暗い部分が暴かれ、刻一刻と完全犯罪の歯車が回り始める。怖くてどうしようもなけれど、それでもページをめくってしまうのが止められないほどの面白さ。その緊張感が衝撃的なラストによってもたらされる驚愕に変わった時、なぜこの作品が書かれて60年以上経った今日も世界中で愛されているミステリーなのか、やっとわかりました。
