子育てと介護、目を覆うような厳しい貧乏生活を続ける清兵衛。
風呂すら入れず、衣服もぼろぼろ、けれども子供達には元気さを見せ、痴呆になった母親ともわりきったつきあいをしている。子供達にとっては、ぼろぼろになる父親の姿を見るのは辛かっただろうが、なぜか彼の目に、貧困の色は見えない。

これは、平凡で真摯な男が生きる素晴らしさを教えてくれるストーリーだ。出世を望まず、家族を愛し、恋人を愛し、人生を愛することを信じ続ける意志の強さは、次第にそれを理解する人に伝わり、愛されるということを教えてくれる。

平々坦々と進むわりに、エンドロールが流れると、胸が締め付けられるように重い。つらい日常を歩む全ての人たちに送る、応援歌のように思えてならない。

山田監督初の時代劇ということですが、気合が入りすぎた恣意的な盛り上がりやドラマチックなものも極力省かれていて淡々と幕末の田舎侍の生活や風俗が描かれていたと思います。チャンバラの場面も結構リアルだし。単なる娯楽時代劇というものではない、まじめなメッセージ性の高い映画だと思います。感受性の貧弱な人が見るとつまらない映画にしか見えないと思いますけど。

私は元々の藤沢作品ファンです。
勿論「たそがれ清兵衛」もよみました。
大筋は似ていますが短編ですので3作ほどを一つに纏められた作品となっております。

原作では見所の一つである主人公のせこい駆け引きもカットされ幾分残念な気持ちもありました。
しかし2度3度と本作を観る内に真田広之さんの瞳に引き込まれました。
城へ上がる時の目立たないようにする情けない瞳、下男や卑女と話す時の気さくな笑顔、家老の訪問を受けた際の所作と即答する断りの潔さ。
追い込まれて断れなくなり引き受けた後の退去の所作。
真田広之さんは武士の所作について能や文楽で勉強されたのでしょうか、様式美と元肉体派である彼の機敏な動きや表情だけで原作にあった「普段は定刻の黄昏時に帰るたそがれ清兵衛」知る人ぞ知る「藩内遂一と噂される剣豪」を見事に演技分け、本人の性分である不甲斐なさから婚儀に至らなかった女性への「死出の化粧の簡潔な依頼」そしてそれを黙って駆けつけ涙も見せずに迅速に処理する女。
送り出した後「生きて戻ることを毛ほども疑わない強い女」とボロボロになって戻る男。涙を流して抱き留める女と身内。
どれをとっても藤沢作品に共通して流れる静謐な空気感が醸し出され巨匠山田洋次の別の顔が伺えます。

ジャケットにもなった太刀を研ぐシーン、無言の中に様々な葛藤が伺え涙ぐんでしまいます。

黒澤作品と並び世界に誇る日本の名作だと感じます。
