内容紹介

主人のマトチェックは35年間この商売をして、かなりの財産を蓄えたが子供がなく、家庭はさびしかった。それだけに商売は熱心で、店員も六人いる。若いクラリックは9年前に丁稚にきて今は一番の古顔で販売主任格であった。彼よりは年上のヴアダス、再篠あるビロヴッチ、女店員のフロラ、イローナ、丁稚のペピの五人がクラリックの下で働いている。クラリックに対する主人の信用は対したもので、晩食によばれるのも店員では彼一人である。店は夏の買い出しで忙しかった。そこへクララという女が販売係りに雇って貰いたいといってきたが、六人でも多すぎるくらいなので、クラリックは独断で断った。そこへ主人が顔を出したので、彼女は今度はマトチェックに申し込む。折しも一人の女客が来たのを捕らえ、クララはクラリックが売り物にならぬと言って仕入れを断るはずになっていた煙草入れを巧みに売り付けた。クララが店員となりクラリックの胸は穏やかではなかった…。

邦題があまりにも馴染めないですね。「THE SHOP AROUD THE CORNER」は大通りからちょっと曲がったところにある店という意味ですが、何故「街角　桃色の店」なの？

マトチェック役のフランク・モーガンは良い俳優ですね。最初は頑固な店の主人という感じでしたが、自殺未遂やら、その後の入院とお騒がせものでした。退院後は人が変わったように性格がまるくなり、本当は従業員思いの親父さんという役でした。

それにしても、最後の文通相手を告白するシーンはドキドキしました。

この映画は後にジュディ・ガーランド主演で、1949年ミュージカル映画「IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME」でリメークされていますので、これと合わせて観ると面白いですよ。最近では、トム・ハンクスとメグ・ライアン共演の「YOU'VE GOT MAIL」が同類のストーリーでしたね。

俳優のトム　ハンクスと女優のメグ　ライアンが共演をした話題作（ユーガットメール）の原点ともいえる作品、同じ店で働く２人は衝突ばかり、会えば喧嘩ばかり、でも、文通ではまさに運命の相手では、と思える程に心が通じ合っている、不況時代のアメリカの革製品専門店という舞台、上司に妻の不倫相手と誤解され、解雇されそうになるなど、内容的にはこちらの方がかなり面白かったです、主演は甘い丹精なマスクで俳優、ケイリー　グランドと人気を二分していた俳優のジェームス　スチュアート、向上心はあるものの純粋さも失っていない発展途上な若者を演じる事が多い彼ですが、この作品でも実に魅力的、面白かったです、文句なしにお勧めですね。

5.0 out of 5 stars クリスマスシーズン向きのロマンティックな御伽噺, 2007/2/11
　幻想を抱く”プリンセス”の前に”白馬の騎士”が・・・。もちろん”プリンセス”は、そのことに気づいていない、という一種の御伽噺。「生活の設計」、「メリィ・ウィドウ」、「ニノチカ」と並ぶほどの佳作。ルビッチ作品はシニカルな（人を食った）面があるのですけれど、本作はそれが薄い。そのかわり、ハートウォーミング度、庶民的なマンティック度ではルビッチ作品中でもトップクラスです。本作、１９４７年に本邦公開され、当時はほとんど無視されたのですけれど、いまやロマンティックコメディとしての評価は不動でしょう。新味はなく手馴れた手法を使ってうまくまとめているという印象はありますけれど、脚本の完成度と機知に富む演出は、「the battle of the sexes」ものの古典として残ります。
