バレエではなく原作「くるみ割り人形」（ホフマン作）を元にした人形アニメ。
ホフマンの世界は世間的な人間関係に疲れ、
濃密な人間関係が展開される狂気の世界へ逃れようとするロマン主義の作品なのだが、
現代日本流に解釈した本作では、むしろ世間的な人間関係を良しとしているように見えた。

しかし人形アニメ制作技術の高さはすばらしいと思う。
突然バレエが入ったりコントが入ったりするところは賛否が分かれるかもしれないが、
幻想世界を見事に描いていると感じた。

小さな少女をヒロインに、「本当の愛とは何か」を主題とし、
直接的な残酷描写や性描写が一切ないところがいっそ怖ろしい、
到底子供向けとは思えない映画。です。
作品「くるみ割り『人形』」の表現媒体として「ストップモーションアニメ」という
『人形』を用いた手法を選び、作中に『人形劇中の人形』を登場させるというシュールさ、
冒頭に唐突に挿入される「ジャンカリン」なる謎の男の怖いエピソード、
ヒロインに関わる、彼とよく似た（つまり不気味な）幾人ものおじさんたち………

大人になった今でも「ひい〜」と悲鳴を上げながら鑑賞してしまいます。
子供心にはジャンカリンのエピソードが怖かった。本当に怖かった。
しかし怖いだけでなく、人形ならではの美しさや楽しさも表現されているところが
ゆたかな映画です。

昔の子供向けアニメーションらしく、唐突にシナリオが転換（展開ではない）したり、
歌が入ったり、今や通じようの無いパロディが入ったり、
生身の人間を用いたバレエシーンが入ったりと、
一見蛇足ともと思われる編集が為されていますが、
広義にはこれら全てが統一感を持って『人形』を強調するような作りになっており、
私は気になりませんでした。

それよりも気になるのは「真実の愛」を知ったその後のこと……
愛しているのは人形か、人形の形代となった人間の男の方なのか……
何度観ても納得がいきません。


ともあれ、夜更かしのお子様には最適です！　これを観せた後で
「早く寝ないとジャンカリンが来るぞ！」
と叫べば一も二もなく布団に飛び込みます。
うっかり幼少期にこれを観てしまったせいで、
15年間トラウマを抱えた私が言うんだから確かです（笑）

子供のころ友達にこの映画の本を借り、大人になってからＴＶ放映されたのをビデオにとり、何度も見ました。大好きです。

この作品の素晴らしいところは何といっても人形と背景。昔はドールハウスなんて言葉も知りませんでしたが、クララのお屋敷はまさにクラシックなドールハウスの世界。とても贅沢に細かく作られていて、階段の手すりなどヨダレが出そうです(笑)。邪道かもしれませんが、ドールハウス好きは一見の価値ありです。お値段も手ごろですし。ロマンチックなファンタジーがお好きな方もどうぞ。
