“宗教曲の衣を纏ったオペラ”といったこの曲のイメージを一新する画期的な演奏である。鋭いアクセントに乗って合唱が明晰に響き、独唱も謹厳として歌い過ぎない。それでいて聴衆を熱い感動で包むのがアーノンクールの凄さだ。ウィーン・フィルの力も大きい。

内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

ミサやレクイエム、つまり宗教音楽というと、有り難くも敬虔な雰囲気に終始するのが普通だろう。ところがこのヴェルデイのレクイエムは、ほとんどオペラの場面をつないでいったような壮大さと劇性がある。しかも出てくるメロデイは、歌詞さえ変えればアリアそのもの。そんな宗教オペラ的作品を、アーノンクールが手掛けるとどうなるか。その答えがこれである。要するにアーノンクールは、この作品から演劇的な音の身振りを極力取り去り、ストイックな宗教音楽としての姿を示そうとしているかのようだ。興奮や絶叫や耽溺の代わりに、総ての演奏者へ精密さと節度を要求し、歌のソロや合唱も、オケパートの一つとして位置づける。なるほどこのやり方なら世俗性は薄れる。だが面白いことに、最終的には宗教性とも離れ、あくまで純粋な器楽曲の再現というところに落ち着く。ユニークな視点と言うべきだ。ただヴェルディご本人にすれば、これは“痛し痒し”かもしれぬが。 (石原立教) --- 2005年09月号

　ライブ録音（2004年12月）。ライブ録音が難しいと聞くムジークフェラインの大ホールだが、非常に素晴らしい
録音の仕上がり。歌詞の発音が非常に綺麗だが、詳しい人によると「これがラテン語の正確な発音」だという。
　アーノンクールは、20世紀の宗教曲はウィーンの作曲家シュミットの「七つの封印の書」を録音済み、
今年、バイエルン放送交響楽団とドボルザーク【スターバト・マーテル】を予定する（ＣＤ化は不明）。
これにブラームスの【ドイツ・レクイエム】が加われば、モンテヴェルディから２０世紀までの
主要な宗教曲のレコーディングが完成する。最近１００年を振り返ってみて、＜巨匠＞レベルの指揮者で
ここまで網羅的に宗教曲を演奏した人はいない。
　本ＣＤの解説、および評論家のこの演奏に対する批評に「従来オペラ的に＜公演＞されてしまうことの
多いこの曲を、＜宗教曲に相応しく演奏した＞」という言説がある。間違ってはいないのだが、
幾分、説明不足ではないだろうか？　なぜなら、アーノンクールの演奏においては、
オペラ（およびオペラ以外の世俗曲）と宗教曲の演奏スタイルの区別が、もともと極小なので、
彼が普段通りに演奏すると「従来の意味でオペラ的」でなくなるのは必然であるからだ。
　そこで＜非オペラ的＞＝＜宗教曲に相応しい演奏＞の意味を次のように説明してはいかがであろうか。
　独唱者はリートもオペラもこなせるだろう人達であり、ソロでも威張り散らす事は無く、
まるで合唱団からピックアップされたかのような緻密なアンサンブル。合唱はグレゴリオ聖歌も現代音楽も
様式感を踏まえて歌いきる実力派。両者とも「いざ」というときは「高級車の12気筒エンジン」なみに
瞬時にパワーを放出するポテンシャルを持っている。加えて、ウィーンフィルは、「音響による言語」理論を
完全に習得しており、指揮者のイマジネーションと完全に一体化した表現。指揮者の解釈は精緻にして
ドラマティック。
