1996年4月6日~9月28日、フジテレビ系列にて放送された時代劇アニメ。非情な忍の世界に失望し、抜け忍となった孤独な忍者カムイと彼を追う数々の刺客の戦いを描いている。

カムイ　いよいよ後半戦です。舞台も変わり、逃げていたカムイがある漁村に落ち着き始め、村娘（同じく抜けたくの一スガルの娘）と恋仲になります。そして同じく抜け忍だった鮫狩りの集団に入り、追手から逃れて生きていこうとしますが、鮫狩りの頭、不動の正体は、実は・・・・。この不動がスゴイ！目は○○だし、変位抜刀霞斬りは破るし。最後も結構インパクトのある死に様ですね。鮫狩りなだけに、生きたまま何匹もの鮫に・・・・。
白土先生の作品は、マンガでありながらウソではない感じがします。この国が歩んできた負の歴史と圧制者と虐げられる人々。教科書には載らないし、歴史上の有名な人物も出て来ませんが、間違いなく、この作品は「歴史」です。
ちなみに、小生が好きなカムイキャラは、名張の五つ、名前の無い３兄弟の忍者（森をピョンピョン飛ぶ３人組）、不動、暗鬼の忍○（言えませんよね）です。

　本編最後のエピソードは、抜け九の一・スガルとその家族とのカムイの交流・そして別れになる。
　今までにない、深い交わりを持った人々との戦い・信頼の思いは切なく、またそれゆえにたばかられて奪われ、訣別に至ったカムイの心情は鬼気迫る。
　カムイの復讐は、人によっては受け入れがたいと思われるかもしれないが、かほどに彼の心が傷つき、涙を流していることを思い遣ってもらいたいと思う。ただ、小さいお子様には刺激が強いかもしれないので、お勧めしない。

　それから、特典の映画版カムイは、スガルの家族とカムイとの交流と別れ、特にスガルの娘とカムイとの恋を中心に描いたものである。
　こちらはテレビ版よりは相当「大人」をターゲットとして意識しているようで、かなりの絵を追加している。が、観ててちょっとビックリするようなシーンもあり、カムイの姿もよりワイルドになっている。
　少なくとも映画版は「サザエさん」と並べてみるようなものではないので、その辺は意識された方がよいと思う。
