贅沢三昧のエディス夫人は、投機に失敗し多額の借金を背負う。そこで夫人は、ビルマの象牙王アラカウに相談しお金を借りた。すぐに返済しようとするが、受け取ろうとしないアラカウ。そして彼は、夫人を自分の所有物であるという証拠に、彼女の肌に焼きゴテをあてた。

早川雪洲は今に至るまで、史上最大の日本人スターである。「戦場にかける橋」のイメージしかない人の方が多いが、１９１０年代にはチャップリンと人気を二分し、現在の換算で年間４０億円を得ていた日本人俳優は二人といない。その雪洲の出世作がこの作品である。後に大監督となるセシル・Ｂ・デミルもこのころは駆け出しであり、ＮＹＣのブロードウェイで芽が出ず、仕方なく西海岸に映画会社を興した直後の作品である。配給はパラマウントなる新興の関連会社に委託して作った本作は、雪洲のあまりにカッコよいバッドガイ振りに全米が熱狂、アメリカではヒットしなかった、などと書く歴史本もあるが、事実は３００万ドルの興収を挙げて、パラマウントも今につながる大映画会社に発展した。しばらくはパラマウントの最高興収の記録となっていたはずである。雪洲とデミルはこれが縁で、かなりのコンビ作を作っている。ルドルフ・ヴァレンチノもハンフリー・ボガートも雪洲に憧れて映画界入りをした。ボガートは戦後「東京ジョー」に雪洲を招き、念願の共演を果たしたのだという。三船も世界に知られた大俳優だが、雪洲はレベルが一段違う。今でいうトム・クルーズやディカプリオレベルのスターであった。ＮＹＣのブロードウェイでも主役を張り（日本人ではあとはソノ・オーサトくらいではないだろうか）、ハリウッドに自身のスタジオを持って、フランスやイギリス、はてはナチスドイツにまで招かれて映画主演した日本人はいない。もっと今の俳優も雪洲を知るべきである。

早川雪洲氏の出演する作品は「戦場に架ける橋」位しか知らない。
しかしハリウッド最初の美形男性俳優として世界に名を轟かせ、彼に影響
を受けて俳優の道に進んだハリウッドスターが何人もいて、ハンフリー
ボガートもその一人らしい。
戦前のサイレント映画から戦後のトーキー映画及び、日本のＴＶ放送初期
のドラマ出演をするなど日本で最初で最大の大スターなのである。
この「チート」というサイレント映画はセシル・Ｂ・デミル監督と組んだ
早川雪洲氏のデビュー作にして最大のヒット作なのだが、一寸
人種差別に基づいた部分があるのかなあと感じる反面、今観てもわかりやすい
ストーリーで音楽も映像にあっていると思った。
人妻に焼きごてを押す極悪人にも拘らず、魅力的な早川雪洲氏に心を奪われ
おしゃれをして映画館に通った女性ファンが大勢いたそうで興味深い。
１９１０年代の女性たちのエレガントなファッションや東洋と西洋の混ざった様な
一寸怪しく美しい家具・美術品はカラーで観てみたかった、モノクロのサイレント
な世界もシックで洒落てて良いんだけれど・・・。

「チート」と言えばサイレント映画の名作中の名作なのだが　音楽が非常に美しいです
僕ですら知っているシーンや音楽が結構出てきたし　言葉はないけど十分に楽しめます
ストーリーも解りやすいし　本作で記念すべきデビューを飾った名優「早川雪州」の演技も良かったです
この映画は３００万円を超えるヒット作となったようです　グロイ描写はありますけど十分楽しめる映画だと思います
