「風の谷のナウシカ」「天空の城ラピュタ」に続く、宮崎駿監督作品のサウンドトラックであり、久石譲さんが手がけたスタジオジブリ作品の第三作目。オーケストラとシンセサイザーの使い方が、高い完成度を見た作品です。(あくまでも現在の久石譲さんの高いレベルに比較して、なので恐縮ですが)まだまだ粗削りなところのあった過去2作品に比べると、本当に洗練されています。

また、音楽自体のレベルアップももちろんのこと、演奏とそれを録音する側の力の入れ方、そして技術の向上が顕著なのも特筆できるでしょう。これはもう、宮崎監督、そして久石さんに対する評価が過去2作品を通じて高まったことにほかならないわけですが、ともかく、よい音楽のよい演奏をよい録音状態で聴くことができるのは、素晴らしいことです。

全体的に短めの曲が多いですが、井上あずみさんの優しいヴォーカル曲がよいアクセントになって、アルバムとしてのバランスも良好です。となりのトトロを代表する旋律である「11. 塚森の大樹」と「13. 風のとおり道」は、メロディの美しさばかりでなく、シンセの使い方がとにかくうまいです。オーケストレーションの素晴らしさでは「5. 夕暮れの風」や「2. 五月の村」でしょうか。短調の曲ながら、「12. まいご」のインストゥルメンタル・ヴァージョン「16. メイがない」も、旋律の美しさでは群を抜いています。指揮を努める久石さんとオーケストラの楽しく演奏している姿が目に浮かぶ「9. 小さなオバケ」や「15. 月夜の飛行」「17. ねこバス」も心地よいです。

映画に思い入れのあるひとが聴けば、より多くの感動を味わえるのは当然のこと、そうでなくても小品ながら名曲の数々を十分に堪能できるアルバムです。

曲自体は、どの曲も本当に良いです。
オーケストラもきれいだし、井上あずみさんの歌声にも癒されるし。
ただ、本当に残念なのが、厳密にいって曲順が物語の展開どおりになっていないことです。
サントラを曲集として聴き、純粋に曲のすばらしさを堪能する方には何の問題もないと思いますが、サントラを聴くときは好きな映画の筋を思い浮かべながら再感動したい私にとって、これはちょっと悔しいです！

誰もが知っていて誰からも愛されているオバケと言ったらトトロですよね。わたしもトトロが大好きで昔はたくさん観ていたのですが最近は忙しくて忘れていました。けれどこのサントラを聴いてあの頃の思いがどんどんよみがえってくるようでした。トトロに会ってみたいと憧れた気持ち、メイやサツキの冒険をワクワクして観ていた気持ちなどがです。一曲一曲聴いていくうちに忘れてたはずのあの場面やこの場面が頭の中に溢れてくるようなかんじでした。
子どもの頃に戻れたらな~なんて思っている人や、毎日の生活に疲れている人などには特におすすめ出来ると思います。下手な癒し系の音楽よりずっと癒しの効果があるのではないかなと思います。
