凝ったジャケット写真が印象的てすが、中味はAlの音創りセンス溢れる親しみやすい作品です。ようやくCD入手できるようになりました、感謝です。
さて本作"自叙伝"は、Alの最高傑作の呼び声高い"Naked songs"のすぐ前にリリースされていますが、これとは対照的にSF的なシンセも程よくブレンドして、楽しく聴ける作品になっています（そう、ジャケットも対照的ですね）。
ドラマチックなテーマ曲や"Childfood's end"、軽快な"Monkey time"、切ない"Bended knees"、繊細に歌い上げるDylanの"Man in me"を含め、まさに"自叙伝"よろしく人の喜怒哀楽、春夏秋冬をしなやかに流れるように描いてみせてくれます。マルチミュージシャン･Alのサウンドセンスが光る、彼ならではのバランスの良さを感じさせてくれます。
LP時代に"赤心"と"自叙伝"を交互に聴くクセがついていた自分としては、しばらくぶりにこのクセを取り戻しそうです。

アル･クーパーの72年のアルバムの紙ジャケ仕様での再発。日本独自の最新リマスター。大傑作『赤心の歌 (Naked Songs)』の一つ前のアルバムで、特殊メイクによる50年後のアル自身というジャケット（これは明らかに映画『2001年宇宙の旅』にインスパイアされたものでしょう）が有名ですが、内容的にも『赤心の歌』と並ぶ傑作アルバム。アルバムの構成や個々の曲の良さなどは『赤心の歌』と同等の出来だと思います。『赤心の歌』も素晴らしいですが、あれだけ人気が高いのはやはり「Jolie」の存在が大きいのかなと思ってしまいます。「Jolie」級の曲はないものの、スモーキー･ロビンソンやジミー･クリフ、ボブ･ディランなどのカバーは素晴らしい出来で、メジャー･ランスの「Monkey Time」（カーティス･メイフィールド作）をやっているのも嬉しい限りです。ただ、雑多な音楽的指向を持つアルにしては、オーソドックスなソウル・Ｒ＆Ｂスタイルに終始していて、あまりにもストレート過ぎるきらいがあり、アルの歌もいつになくクールな感じもします（『赤心の歌』との差はアルの歌声の温度差によるものか）。シンセやメロトロンの使用も特徴的で、オープニングなどはシンセの音がいかにもチープなのが時代を感じさせますが、それでもやはりアル･ファンは必聴のアルバム。リマスターによる音質向上は『赤心の歌』ほどではありませんが優秀な部類でしょう。
