   サン=サーンスの「オルガン付き交響曲」のこのレコーディングは、しばしば決定盤とみなされる。デュトワのタッチはせきたてることなく、軽やかで、世俗的であり、重い意味が込められることをいっさい避けている。直観的にロマン主義者である彼は、演奏者たちの感性の助けを借りて、音域の低いほうのパートのじつにさまざまな変化を実現する。彼のキューの出し方は高度に有機的で、新しいフレーズごとに展開する余地を与える。ここでのデュトワは同僚の指揮者がけっしてできなかったことをやり遂げている。つまり、オルガンとオーケストラの戦いのように見える作品の代わりに、ここには明快な、踊りのような優雅さとすばらしいバランスがあるのだ。オーケストラは手のこんだポリリズム的な転調を申し分のない正確さで表現する。進行中、デュトワは最終楽章で使うとてつもなく巨大なエネルギーを蓄えておく。一方、ロンドンに戻ると、「動物の謝肉祭」に対する戦術は逆転しているように見える。もしデュトワがノアだとしたら、すべての動物を箱舟にうまく詰め込むのは難しいことに気づくだろう。個々の動物たちの大きさや重さをつねに考慮に入れていなかったからだ。有名なソリストたち全般にすばらしい出来だが、進行の具合がじつに微妙なので、ユーモアの大半はうまく表現されていない。なぜジョークを隠すのだろう。とはいえ、「オルガン付き交響曲」がここでのメインの出し物だとしたら、なんでもこなせる小交響楽団は、個別の曲からなる軽やかで流れるような「謝肉祭組曲」を供する。(Yngvil V. This recording of Saint-Saëns's Organ Symphony is often regarded as definitive. Dutoit's touch is unrushed, light and secular, avoiding any heavy meaningfulness. Intuitively romantic, he enlists his players' sensitivity in achieving great variety in the softer parts of the range. His cueing is highly organic, giving each new phrase scope to develop. Here Dutoit achieves what many of his colleagues never do: instead of the piece seeming like a battle between organ and orchestra, here there is a clear, dance-like elegance and superb balance. The orchestra hit the tricky polyrhythmic transitions with faultless precision. In the process, Dutoit stores up some seriously potent energy which he applies in the final movement. Meanwhile, back in London, the tactic for Carneval des Animaux seems to be inverted. If Dutoit were Noah, he might find it difficult to fit all the animals into his Ark, as he doesn't always take their individual size and weight into account. The celebrity soloists are superb all round, but the proceedings are all so subtle that much of the humour goes amiss. Why conceal the jokes? Nevertheless, if the Organ Symphony is the main attraction here, the versatile Sinfonietta serve up a discrete, light and fluid Carneval Suite. --Yngvil V.G.
