一般の教育機関において、本格的な軍事学を講義するところはそう見つからない。しかしながら国際情勢を正確に判断する場合には、軍事の知識は不可欠であろう。本書は軍事を一般理論ならびに歴史的に詳述すると同時に、化学兵器一覧表なども掲載してあり、入門書としても読み応えは十分にあると感じた。また本書が挙げている参考文献も良質なものが多いので、そこから新たに学問を積むこともできよう。軍事に興味がないと退屈であろうが、政治学や国際政治学、国際関係学等を専攻している学生にとって、読んで損はないと思う。

　本書は、軍事の基本知識を学ぶための入門書と位置づけることができる。最近では、日本の大学でも国際関係論などの講座の中に軍事学が取り入れられるようになってきており、本書はその教科書としても十分通用する内容となっている。特に軍事力とはどういうものなのか、また軍事学を学ぶ意義とは、どういうことなのかを改めて考えさせられる。我々、日本人の中には、「水と安全はタダ」という意識が、まだ根強く残っている感じがする。
　そんな中で、軍事をすでに学んでいる人、まだ軍事の概念をよく理解していない人にもお勧めといえる。中でも現代の軍事力の態様という章は、陸上、海上、航空戦力について分かり易く書かれている。また、統合作戦についても述べられているので、今後、どのように陸上、海上、航空戦力の統合がなされるのかが興味深い。
　発行より年数が経ているので、改訂版を出していただきたいと思う。

　確かに体系的に良くまとめられています。古典的な戦略・戦術の概略を網羅していますが、国防問題も科学技術と同様、日進月歩の『生きたもの』です。9.11を境に世界の国防意識は豹変し、国防問題は国益中心の戦争から対テロ組織、果ては海賊退治へとパラダイムシフトしました。この書が出版されてから自衛隊の活動内容はどれほど変わったでしょうか。自衛隊装備も進化し続け、新型戦車の他遂にヘリ空母まがいの16DDHも出現しました。北朝鮮問題についても具体例中心に大幅な追加を期待します。戦略決定、戦術の選択・組合せ、作戦立案、兵器運用、部隊展開、ロジスティックス、応戦決断、そして"最大の防御"など、最新の事態に適合し、しかも核心に触れる事まで言及できて本書の価値は向上してゆきます。常にリフレッシュしていく事を念頭に置いて執筆される事を願っています。
