原題は「ＭＡＤ　ＣＯＷＢＯＹ］狂ったカウボーイであるが、
この方が内容を正確に表している。

著者は牧畜で有名なモンタナ州で大規模農場を経営していたが、
次第にモンサントなどの化学会社に支配される現代酪農を否定し始め、
ついに大手術をきっかけに、家族経営の有機農業を志す。
ロビイストを経て、ついにヴェジタリアニズムこそが、自分とアメリカ人を救い、
地球を救うことを痛感した。そういう人生の物語である。

類書はいろいろとあるが、農場主から出発して、
有機農業、さらには肉食の全面的否定に至るというのは
めったにない話ではないだろうか。

むろんヴェジタリアンは健康も優れており、
ＢＳＥの恐れもなく、過放牧による土壌の砂漠化などの事実も
十分にもとりあげられており、読み応えがある。
多くの人に読んでもらいたい警世の書である。
