私自身、子供の頃にお父さんに何度も何度も読んでもらった思い出の本です。読んでいると主人公のかおると一緒に、いつの間にか不思議な世界に入っていくのがとても楽しかった記憶があります。母によると、これを読んで、自分もお父さんのお迎えに行きたいとねだったそうです。

雨ふりです。
カオルは傘を持って駅までお父さんをお迎えに行きました。
でも、なかなか改札から出てこないので、待ちくたびれました。

そこへ現れたオレンジ色のトラ猫に導かれ、電車に乗ってしまいます。
それはなんと、動物専用車両でした。

のりかえ、のりかえ、いつの間にかひとりぼっち。
はじめは、冒険でワクワクしていた気持ちも、
だんだん不安に変わってきます・・・。

こどもの頃、電車の中というのは異世界でした。
非日常。どこへ行くのか分からない、不安。
大人になった今でも、知らない場所で知らない電車に乗ると、
同じような気持ちになります。

あめふり　ざんざんぶり　かさもって　おむかえ
びしょぬれ　ぼうず　なけ　なけ
あめふり　ざんざんぶり　どろっぷ　なめて　おむかえ

この歌うような文章は、雨音のメロディーのようですね。

駅で父親を待っているといつまで経っても
改札から出てこない時があります。
だんだん不安になってお父さんが待ちきれなく
なっていきます。そんなかおるがオレンジ色の
猫の手を借りてお父さんを迎えに行く物語です。

今のように携帯電話がない時代、子どもはひたすら
お父さんを待ちます。本書は1969年10月発行の物語。
だからこそ、かおるがお父さんに会えたときの喜びが
一層伝わります。しかし本書ではかおるの顔は見えません。
文章からかおるの顔を想像するしかないのです。
ですから対象年齢は年長というより小学校低学年だと
私は思いました。

長新太の絵の特徴的なピンク色はありません。
明るく落ち着いた色合いで描かれる動物たちが
きちんと電車内の座席に座っているページは
とても可愛らしいです。長新太の猫は今回は
割合とシリアスな顔をしていて、絵の変遷を感じられます。
お父さんをお迎えに行きたくなる一冊です。
