　すばらしく精緻な安野さんの絵が楽しめます。とても凝った絵で、ペペロン村などの童話などに出てくる絵とは雰囲気が異なります。中心となる絵だけでなく周りの枠にもその言葉にちなんだ絵が描かれてあります。開いたページの左側には木材を思わせる５０音の絵文字がありますが、このうち「さ」だけは桜の木になっているのが少しおしゃれな感じで安野さんのこだわりを見るような気がします。
　今は大きくなった子供に聞いてみました。「この本であいうえおを覚えたの？」と。すると、この本は好きだったけど、あいうえおがあるからではなく、すごくきれいな絵だったので気に入ってたという答えが返ってきました。そう、それでいいのですよね、教育絵本などと決めつける必要はありません。美しい絵を大人も子供楽しめる本がこれです。

３歳の息子が、そろそろ字に興味を持つ頃ではないかと思っていたところだったので、たまたま本屋で見つけて手にとってみました。開いてみたら、木目が美しい木でつくった文字と、その文字にぴったりの、素朴でちょっと懐かしい感じがする絵。著書の言葉にあるように、文字を教えよう、というのではない日本の伝統的な形と、ことばを結びつけたかった。という気持ちがすごく伝わってくる絵本です。初めて文字と言葉が結びついたときに、安野光雅さんの描く、上質な絵が頭に浮かんでくれるといいなと思いながら、息子と一緒に楽しく眺めています。

見開きの左側には木で作られたひらがな一文字が、右側にはその文字のつくものが描いてあります。さらに、両ページの周囲には、白黒の控えめなタッチで、その文字に関した絵飾りがトリミングされています。例えば「け」のページを開くと、左側に木が一部「け」ずられた「け」の字、右側には剣玉の美しい絵、さらに周囲を取り囲む絵飾りにはケイトウ、芥子、毛虫、けらが。

安野光雅さんの絵はこの本で始めて知りましたが、写実的な美しさ、暖かさ、精緻さ、ユーモアに脱帽しました。本を開くたびに、「あ、ここにも絵が隠れてた！」という発見があります。

友人の２才の子供もお気に入りだそう。２、３才の幼児には、字のない絵本としても楽しめます。また、幼稚園~小一の子供には、文字を楽しく教える本として最適の一冊でしょう。字を覚えた後でも、もの探し絵本として、小学生から大人まで、何度も楽しめる絵本です。
