氏原 巨雄
1949年、高知県高知市生まれ。1973年上京。日本画の勉強の過程で鳥に興味を抱き、次第に鳥の観察に傾倒するようになる。1984年より鳥をおもな題材とした絵画展を12回開催。1987年、鳥類画家として図鑑等にイラストの執筆を始める。現在はシギチドリ、カモメ、カモなどの水鳥と、自宅周辺の里山の鳥、昆虫、植物の観察に忙しい日々を送っている(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

画家であり自然観察者である著者の鋭い観察眼による丹念な観察記録と美しいスケッチ集である。オオタカという種の生き様を見つめる著者の暖かい目を感じた。対象を長期にわたり地道に正確に観察してゆくことの大切さを再認識した。もうひとつ感じたのははまったく別のこと。優れた撮影機材が容易に手に入り、便利な情報通信環境の完備されたこの時代に、残念ながらひとつ足りないのは人々のモラル。自分のせいで、モラルの無いカメラマンがオオタカの繁殖を邪魔したら....密猟者にヒナをさらわれたら....こういう事態を心配しながら、結果的に秘密主義で観察を続けざるを得ないもどかしさは十分理解できる。はらはらしながら熱心に観察を続ける著者の息遣いが聞えるような良書と言いたい。夏休みに多くの子供に読んでもらいたい。そしてオオタカの素晴らしさと自然に接する態度を読みとって欲しい。もちろんまずお父さんが読んでからね。あと、水彩画であるためくっきりしたシャープさはないが、雰囲気はびんびん伝わってくる。

自分の住んでいる住宅地に突然、絶滅が危ぶまれる生物が現れたら、それだけで驚くことだろう。ましてや繁殖しているとわかったらなおさらだ。
本書はオオタカの繁殖活動を９年間に渡り観察し、その記録をスケッチと共にまとめたものである。
これまでもオオタカの繁殖活動をまとめた本はあるが、密猟と闘う人々の記録も掲載されていて純粋に繁殖活動をまとめた本は少なかった（密猟も重要な問題であり、避けられないことには違いない）。本書は日記のようにまとめられているので、ペアリングから営巣、抱卵、そして子育てまで細かく記載されている。
猛禽類が都市部に繁殖場所を移していると言われている。ある日、目の前に巣を作るかもしれない。そんな時、我々はどうすべきなのか。希少動物と付き合う上での貴重な資料となるはずだ。
