本書を読むことで子どもから大人まで、素人からマニアまで、それぞれのレベルで多くの発見があるでしょう。私は本書でホラアナゴキブリというものの存在を初めて知り、うろたえました。なお本書の中で著者が述べているように、里山保全と称して枯れ木まで撤去して見栄えの良い林を作る運動が大流行していますが、こうした林は人間にとっては訪れやすくとも、朽ち木性昆虫を始めとした多くの生物にはかえって住みにくい環境になっています。里山保全運動を推進する人たちはいろんな理由（生物多様性には攪乱が必要、など）を持ち出してきては自らの運動（人間にとって見栄えのよい自然を作る運動）の正当性を主張しますが、一度徹底的に検証しなおす必要があるでしょう。

暖かくなってきて、森に子供といくのに、里山の虫の本とあわせて買ってみました。難しい言葉がたくさんでてきますが、解説してくれているページもあるので、虫大好きっ子の小５の息子も夢中のようです。森に行くときに持ち歩くサイズとして丁度良さそうです。

なかなか目のつけどころがすばらしいが、
このボリュームで、腐朽材に生息する昆虫を扱うのは無理。
このサイズに収めるなら、
キノコに生息するものを別にするなど工夫が必要だったかもしれない。
家で眺めるにはそこそこ楽しめるが、
写真が小さく、野外に持ち出しても、あまり使えないであろう。
企画がすぐれているだけに惜しい。
