林将之氏のシダハンドブックがあまりに美しい本
だったのでこの本もとても欲しくなりました。
氏の手にかかるとふだん「ただの雑草」ですませて
しまっている草がこれほど美しいものなだったのか、
ということがこの本でもよくわかりました。

元、昆虫少年だった夫に見せると、小一時間見入って
「この本、すごくいい！」と興奮していました。まず
●虫の写真がどれも可愛い、こんな可愛い幼虫の写真
　が載ってるのがすごい
●葉の食痕が乗っているところもわかりやすい
●葉の特徴を一目でとらえることができる
と絶賛の嵐。さっさと自分の書棚にしまいこみました。

私自身は虫が苦手、で、今までフィールドで出会っても
すぅ〜っと目を避けていたところがありますが、
この本の森上信夫氏の虫たちの写真を見ていて、ああ
もったいないことをしていたなぁと反省しきりでした。
虫ってこんな可愛い生き物だったのですね。

昆虫だけの図鑑、草や木だけの図鑑はありますが、
両方をいっぺんに、しかもわかりやすく載せてあり
なおかつフィールドで持ちやすい大きさというのは
とても魅力的です。
情報量もたっぷりで、宝箱のよう。
お二人の著者がご自身の博識ぶりを押し付けることなく
「虫ってこんなに可愛いんだよ」」「草はこんなに
キレイなんだよ」という愛情ある目線で作られている
からこその一冊ですね。

これから虫も草も勉強するぞ！！

・・・ハンディサイズで８０ページと、とても軽いこの本、とても綺麗な写真が多くて、見やすいです。
　そして、なによりも、バランス感覚がとってもいいなぁ！
　と感心してしまいました。

　きれいな蝶ちょ、カミキリ、オトシブミ、クワガタ・・・

　　　といった昆虫の選抜センスと、いきいきした写真。。。

　また、それぞれの昆虫に添えた　食草・食樹　の解説の中で、選抜した植物も、私たちの身近な街路樹から里山の草木まで、バランスよい選抜と、クローズアップ写真の見やすさ（葉っぱと、立ち姿）が際立っています。

たとえば、庭先から里山まで広く見られる蝶ちょ、キアゲハ　のページでは、

　　食草として、「セリ、ニンジン、ミツバ、パセリ、シシウドなど」

とあります。
これだけでも、私たちの目に付きやすい野菜や山菜から山野草まで織り交ぜていますよね。そして、クローズアップしたミツバの説明では、

　　　　暖・冷・畑　（←野生では暖地、寒冷地に分布、畑でも栽培、という印）

【分布】北海道〜九州。
　　　　山野の湿った林内や林縁にふつうに生え、栽培もされる。・・・
　　　　・・・食用に出回るものに比べ、野生のものは葉が大きい。

などと、野外で見つけるポイントから、栽培品と野生品のちょっとした違いまで記述があります

各ページのあちこちに、こうした工夫があって、お手軽ながら読み応えのある、おすすめのハンドブックです。

都市部でもよく見かける様々の蝶や蛾をメインに、その他の甲虫等82種の昆虫が取り上げられている。幼虫・成虫の姿ばかりでなく、68種の食草・食樹の葉と、特徴的なものについては食痕の写真も掲載されているので私のような素人にも分かりやすい。蝶・蛾についての前半部に比べて「樹液に来る昆虫」と題された後半部の勢いにやや翳りが見られるのは、この項が大人の事情によって追加されたことを想像させるが、全体的には、入門書として悪くないだろう。
