星空を背景に、ＳＬが煙を上げながら宙を走り去っていく。乗客は、機械の身体を夢見る少年と、少年の水先案内をする謎多き美女。幻想的で絵のような美しさですね。

でも、その内容は美しさと違っていて、なかなかキツイものがあります。旅の途中で停車する星々で出会う人たちは、優しくまじめに精一杯生きている人もいるんですが、人間の弱さ・醜さ・見栄・裏切りなど負の側を見せる人のほうが圧倒的に多い。そんな連中を目のあたりにしながら、少年は少しずつ「男」へと成長していく。そしてたどり着く終着駅では、驚きが待っています。

近い将来に、この「銀河鉄道９９９」の世界のような、機械至上主義、人間が機械に使われる世界が待っているのでは？機械の走る道路を造るために森を切り開き、機械の出す排気ガスが問題になっている。名作とはいえ古い作品ですが、機械への依存度の高い現在だからこそ、ぜひ読んでもらいたい作品です。

　これは私が小学校に入ったか入らないかといった時期に読んだものである｡子供ながらにワクワクして観ていたものだ。テレビが先か漫画が先かはよく覚えていないが、とにかく面白かった｡そのシリーズは漫画･テレビ･映画と有るが､やはり漫画の出来が一番良いと思う。特に初めから機械化母星を破壊するまでのストーリーが最も良い。テレビもナカナカ音楽も良いので､捨てがたいのだが､どちらかと言うとこの漫画のほうがクオリティは高いと見た｡より「999らしい」のである。また､テレビのほうはよく「受け狙い」でもともとの話とはちょっと違う形になるケースがあるから､やはりこれは漫画を読んだほうが良いと思う｡
　999は「地球には機械化人間と生身の人間とがいて､生身の人間はまるで動物のような扱いを受けている・・・」という話｡これは凄いです｡当時にあって衝撃的内容・・・しかし実は戦前･戦後暫くは世界は実際こうだったわけで（人種差別）､その意味でこれは史実に基づいた、「現実の世界」をベースにしてある説得力ある作品です。
