1876年、サンフランシスコで生まれる。91年には缶詰工場で働く一方、養殖牡蛎の密漁にかかわったりする。94年、「ホーボー」の仲間入りをし、アメリカ北部とカナダの各地を放浪。96年、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校に入学するが、一学期で退学。ほとんど独学で当時の新しい思想を吸収した。97~98年クロンダイク・ゴールド・ラッシュに加わり、冬のユーコン河の流域で過ごす。1916年歿

有馬 容子
津田塾大学大学院博士後期課程修了。城西国際大学人文学部助教授を経て、山脇学園短期大学英語科教授。専攻はアメリカ文学(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

僅か四十歳の若さで早世し生涯に１９７編の短編を遺したアメリカ文学の巨匠ロンドンの幻想的な傾向の作品５編を集成したオリジナル中短編集です。本書の収録作品を読んで純粋にオカルト的な怪奇幻想色を感じるのは二編で、残りの三編は自然の中で暮らし闘う人間の逞しさが描かれていると思いました。本書を読もうと考えた理由は先に出版された柴田元幸氏翻訳の作品集「火を熾す」が素晴らしかったからですが、すぐに気づいたのは２冊に「水の子」という作品が重複している事です。本書の有馬容子氏の訳文と比べて見ますと違いが見えて面白いです。柴田訳では主人公が「私」であるのに対し有馬訳では「僕」となっている事、そして一番大きな違いは有馬訳が土地の特異な言葉をカタカナ表記で書いて訳注で詳しく説明している点でしょう。柴田訳では日本人にわかりやすい平易な表現に置き換えられています。どちらが良いかは一概には言い切れず、きっと人それぞれの好みで評価が分かれるだろうと思います。
『夜の精』：禿げで喉の肉のたるんだ四十七歳のおやじが酒場で仲間達に語る三十五歳の頃のロマンス噺です。ロッキー山脈を旅する途上で出逢ったインディアン部族を統率して暮らす野性味溢れる娘との短いけれど情熱的に終わった恋をノスタルジックに語っています。『赤い球体』：文明国からグアダルカナルのジャングルにやって来た男が熱病に倒れ、不思議な赤い球体を信仰する未開人から白人の首を保存しようと狙われ死の時を待ち望まれます。『コックリ占い板』：長く親密なのに何故か結婚を拒む男を愛する女の亡くなった父親の霊がコックリ占い板で不吉な予言を告げます。やがて愛馬が突然狂ってしまう怪異が頻発し二人の身に恐ろしい危険が襲い掛かります。
本書を読んで読書の喜びを呼び覚ます味わい深く高い完成度の作品にますます惹かれましたので、今後更に著者の翻訳作品集を探して追い掛けて行きたいと思います。
