　これだけ詳細に
　関連事項が網羅された書物はまず無いでしょう。
　小泉八雲自身の孫と曾孫が編纂にあたり、関係者の協力も
　充分に得られたからこそ実現したものでしょう。
　写真や図版が豊富で、ほんとうはもっと大判の書籍にすれば、
　もっと楽しめるものになったでしょうが、コストの関係で
　圧縮して詰めこまれたのだと理解できます。　　
　恒文社の良心的な出版の例であると感心しました。

小泉八雲を愛する人には何回見ても飽きることがない写真集です。

これだけ多くの珍しい写真が一冊の本で手軽に見られるということ
は仕合せです。日本人の一般読者としては特に来日以前の事蹟に関
係のある写真や資料は興味が尽きませんでした。

主要著作一覧にかかげられた著作の写真も貴重ですが、ただそこに
フロベール他の翻訳書や大学での講義録が欠けているのが残念です。
文中に紹介のある「一異端者への手紙」という書簡集などについて
も正確な情報が知りたいと思いました。これを含め関係書籍の目録
の類も付録にあると便利でした。また、ハーンの死後、東京大学で
の講義録をアメリカで出版したJohn Erskineやその他の人物等との
交友関係等も知ることができたらとよかったと思います。何時どの
ような経緯でこのような学者との交友が開始されたのか、私には今
でも不明です。

これだけの内容の本が２５００円で手に入れられるということを考
えると本がいかに安いものであるかということがよくわかります。

　1904年9月26日に亡くなったラフカディオ・ハーンの生涯を詳細な年譜を中心にまとめた本。主要部は、章だてが、生誕、幼少年時代、アメリカ時代、仏領西インド諸島時代、日本時代の５章から成っていて、まず大枠が記憶に残りやすい。詳細な年譜が各ページの下端に配され、それに関する写真が簡潔な説明付きで各ページの過半を埋める。とても貴重な人物や資料、風景の写真などがたくさん見られるほか、現代の風景や建物、子孫の写真も添えられている。

　しかし、年譜が詳しいのは、何かをチョット確かめようという時には煩わしくていらいらすることがある。しかし、そんなときにはハーンの作品集、例えば「小泉八雲集（新潮文庫）」などの巻末につく年譜をたよりにした後、要すればこの本の詳細版に立ち返る道もある。

　年譜だけでなく、簡潔な足跡地図、ハーンゆかりの地［アイルランド編］［日本編］、系図、主要作品一覧、曾孫の小泉凡氏による解説なども収められている。ハーンをおとなう時、座右におくと便利な本。もし、没後100年にあたって、ハーンの作品を読み、ゆかりの土地を訪ねたくなったら、この本を携えればガイドは要らない、と言えるほど。
