経済学の「歴史」に関する研究は、所詮、「過去」の言説をめぐる古臭い考古学的な意味しか有していないのだろうか。こうした問題意識を有する読者には本書を通読されることをお薦めしたい。本書は伊藤誠教授と彼の弟子たちが各専門分野を執筆担当して仕上がった論文集という印象が強いが、いろいろと考えさせられる。「マルクスによる経済学批判の精神を現代にいたる経済学の歩みの全体におよぼしてみたい」（i）というのが本書の根本理念だ。新たな思想と理論はつねにそれ以前の学説への批判精神から生まれる。いわゆる「革命」と呼称されるもの、すなわちアダム・スミス革命しかり、限界革命しかり、そしてケインズ革命しかりである。言うまでもなくマルクスの経済学もスミス、リカードの古典派経済学の批判的継承という側面をもつ。経済学とはいわば「論争の歴史」なのだ。論争の意義は単一の回答を導き出すことが主たる目的ではなく、それが新たな思想や理論を生み出してゆくための知的な教練場であるという点にある。支配的な経済理論パラダイムは時代とともに変遷する。忘れられたかにみえる過去の言説がある時代に再び新たな輝きと生命力をもって蘇る。経済学史は決して過去の遺物ではない。それは今に生きる経済学そのものなのだ。各章の末尾にある「経済学史にみる現代」というコラムもそのことを端的に示していないか。専門的な論文として読める章もあり（例えば第7章）初学者には難しい内容ではあるが、本書とじっくり格闘すれば経済学の奥深さを十分に味わうことが可能であろう。浮気をする必要はない。また巻末の「人物紹介」も本書の魅力を高める要因であろう。「少なくともどのような料理にも耐える新鮮な材料は提供している」（iii）といってよい。欧米のマルクス理論家であったモーリス・ドッブの『価値と分配の理論』を想起させうるような骨太な経済学史の姿を本書にみるのは私だけはあるまい。
