　一番印象に残ったのは、子供のころ熱狂した「１５少年漂流記」（原題「２年間のバカンス」）の主人公に相当するブリアンにモデルがいて、そのモデルさんが後に「ケロッグ＝ブリアン条約」を結んだ政治家になった、というトリビア話。ヒューマニストだったベルヌも根っこのところでは人種差別主義者で帝国主義者だったという著者の主張は「まあ、そうだろうな」と思うしかありませんが、そのためにベルヌのすべての小説を読破しそのあらすじまで紹介した努力には頭が下がる。ねちっこさに辟易する人もいいると思いますが、学者の仕事とはそういうものだし、労作とはそういうものなのでしょう。ベルヌという大好きな（そしておそらくは偉大な）作家とその作品についてだけでなく、フランスの歴史と国民性、欧州を軸とした近代世界史について理解を深める役にもたちます。
