　漢字が本当によく分る。スゴイ字書が出たものだ。

　数年前、初めて著者の字書に触れた時、正直、難しくて使えなかった。世間に氾濫するいい加減な説明の漢和辞典と違って記述が詳しいのはいいけど、初めて聞く言葉が次々と出て来て、字書を読むためにまた辞書を引かねばならなかった。

　「あーあ、もっと分りやすく説明してくれればいいのになあ」と思ったものだ。

　『常用字解』は分りやすい。しかも記述に手を抜いてない。馴染みのない言葉は括弧内で意味を説明しつつ、漢字が創られた当時の社会状況・人々の感覚にまで踏み込んで、常用漢字を説明している。

　中高生でも読める解説文で漢字に対する現代最高レベルの理解を得られる。漢字を理解すると、日本語が、前よりもずっとよく分る。

　いままで買った本をマーケットプレイスで売ってでも購入されることをお薦めします。

たとえば、屋根の下に豚がいるから｢家｣。屋根の下に女がいるから｢安｣らか。牛が人を角で突いて知らせるので｢告｣。真剣に漢字を理解しようとする人間がこのような漢字の字源の説明を聞いて疑問に思わないことがあるだろうか。また、子供にこのような漢字の字源の説明を求められて戸惑いをおぼえないことがあるだろうか。

これは従来字源の聖典視されていた『説文解字』の無批判な踏襲に起因する。後漢に編まれた『説文解字』のいちばんの問題は甲骨文字を知らなかったことにある。甲骨文字の発見は１８９９年。以来字源の研究は長足の進歩を遂げた。

しかるに、次々に発刊される漢和辞典の語源の説明は以前として『説文』を踏襲している。これは説文学者の怠慢に他ならない。

『常用字解』は甲骨文字発見以来の成果を採り入れると同時に、宗教・社会・風俗などの文化史的理解に基づき漢字の構造と字源を説明している。つまりいわゆる白川漢字学に基づいている。｢家｣、｢安｣、｢告｣など白川漢字学に照らし合わせると、従来の解釈とはまったく異なる真実がこの上ない説得力を持って現れてくる。

本書は常用漢字だけを取り上げている。中・高校生を対象にしていると著者はいうが、内容のレベルはそれより高く、大著『字通』の格好の入門書であり、漢字に興味を持つ人すべてが座右にすべきであろう。

徹底した実証的研究から漢字の起源と本来の意味を追求する現代屈指の碩学白川静氏が一般の読者に向けて編纂した漢字字書。

白川氏がかつて上梓した『字通』や『字訓』といった字書が専門家向けという色合いを帯びているのに対し、今回の『字解』は、常用漢字に限定して字の成り立ちを詳細に説明するのが特徴だ。

常用漢字だけ、という選択に物足りなさを感ずる読者もいるだろうが、かねてから「実際に使用されない文字を多数収録し、字数ばかり増やして得意顔になるのは単なる自己満足であって、字書は常用漢字を正しく説明することを第一としなければならない」という著者の長年の主張の反映でもある。

普段何気なく使っている漢字が、どれほど豊かな世界をもっているか。それが十分伝わる一冊だ。
