国際弁護士　湯浅卓氏の初翻訳という本です。

どちらかというと、小説として読むより小泉八雲のもしくは怪談の研究のための本という感じ、でしょうか。
湯浅氏は、小泉八雲の一言一句を正確に訳そうと努力しているとおもいます。

直訳というのとはまた違うのですが、英文の一語一語を正確に訳して、ラフカディオ・ハーンが、どういう風にこの「怪談」を西洋に紹介していたのかをしらせたい、そんな意気込みが感じられます。

そのせいで多少読みづらいところもありますが、私は「雪女」や「みみなし芳一」の新たな魅力を感じられたと思います。
また、後書きの考察はとても興味深く、おもしろいですよ。

この本は、原書を横に置いて見比べながら読むのが、良いかもしれません。

時を経て、再びラフカディオ・ハーン（小泉八雲）のロマンともいえる世界と
美しい語り「怪談」を堪能しました。
訳者である湯浅卓氏の美しい文章は、確かな説得力を読み手に与えています。

えっ！　訳者が、あの湯浅というひと？
と、思いましたが、読んでみるとなかなかでした。

ものすごくうまい、日本語になっているとはいいませんが、
原文の雰囲気をよく伝えているのではないでしょうか？
と言っても、まだ原文で読んだことないですが・・

「耳なし芳一」で、芳一が、鎧の武者と一緒に、平家の亡霊の
集まる場所へ行くときの、鎧の武者の言葉、「開門！」が、
原文では、path on　だとは、知りませんでした。
そして、path onとは、死ぬ、という意味もあるそうです・・

オノマトペも、独特で、面白い。
