日本では全く知られていない「楊家将」だが、中国では「三国志」「水滸伝」と並び民衆から絶大な人気を博している物語。ただ原典（楊家将演義）の出来がイマイチなため、中国では文学というより京劇の人気演目と位置づけられている。
さてこの“北方版”楊家将。宋の軍人として戦いに散った楊業一族を主役に据えた以外はほぼ原典から逸脱、その点では張飛を妻帯させるなどした北方版「三国志」同様、掟破りの北方ワールドが炸裂している。という訳で、本作を読んだだけで中国人と「楊家将」を論じたりすると、話が噛み合わないから要注意。
絶対的に頼れる武将の父親と個性豊かな七人の息子、一族を取り巻く一癖も二癖もある武官・文官、さらには敵国の武将に至るまで全てのキャラがしっかりと立っており、「そうだ、男はこう生きねば」と雄々しい気持ちにさせられてしまう小説だ。

宋と遼との争いの中で、稀代の名将、楊業率いる楊一族の戦いを描いた作品。

私は宮城谷昌光氏の小説が好きで、ほとんど読みましたが、
宮城谷さんが描く中国史小説とは明らかに異なる作風です。

宮城谷さんは、主人公の周りの環境はもちろん、その国に周りの環境、さらには中華全体の周りの環境をも感じさせ、主人公が活躍した時代全体を見渡しています。

しかし、この楊家将では、楊一族と、そのライバル達の熱い闘いをテンポ良く、濃密に描かれています。それだけに感情移入しやすく、クライマックスでは誰もが感動してしまうほどの出来になっています。

登場人物の個性がしっかりしていて、誰が主人公になってもおかしくないくらい、魅力的な人物が躍動しています。

楊業の神がかり的な強さ、楊一族の誇り、敵国の武人の脅威、宋国内の分裂などなど、すべてを含めて楽しめると思います。

中国では「三国志」や「水滸伝」に負けない人気を持っている話らしいです。僕は北方さんが好きなので迷わずに買いました。読んでみると、いつもの北方ワールドが味わえました!!ストーリーもスンナリ理解できて　「楊家将」に関する予備知識が全くない(ほとんどの人がそうでしょうが/笑)僕でも楽しく読めました(笑)オススメですよ!
