　力作である。社会学に分類される分野のようだが、組織論を考えている者にとっても、近年の組織理論の変遷を学ぶことのできる格好のテキストである。
　著者の先生方は組織理論に関し、企業文化論、組織文化論、組織アイデンティティ論、そして「組織は制度と文化にしたがう戦略にしたがう」新制度学派組織理論について、一挙連続集中講義を本書で行っている。
　いたるところで、新制度学派組織論を理解する上でのキィワードについて触れる。「技術的環境」、「共有価値」、「行為戦略」、「効率性モデル」、「社会化過少」、「社会化過剰」、「成員性の認知」、「制度的環境」、「組織フィールド」、「同型性」などなど。多数の概念を用いながらも、初学者にも何とか理解してもらおうとする、著者らの熱意が随所に現れる。これが、読んでいてやや混乱を招くという一面もある。
　しかし、これまで「組織内部の文化と社会制度にかかわる問題について一貫して論じた文献は、ほとんど見あたらない」(p.iv)のは事実である。制度と組織の関係や理論としての問題（の見つからないものはない）とその克服に向けた糸口も提唱され、何度も参考文献を当たりながら読み進んだ。ほとんどが、アメリカの文献なので骨が折れた。
　今後、この分野のリーダーであるスコットやパウエル、ディマジオ、マイヤー、フリグスタインらの著作を日本語で読めるように、著者の先生方に是非もう一押しのご尽力をお願いしたい。
　体裁も最近になく秀でている。目次は詳しく、索引付き、注釈参考文献付き、ひも付きである。

社会学・民族学的な観点から文化と制度を切り口に企業組織に関する諸理論の整理と批判的考察がされています。

企業文化論、組織文化論、組織アイデンティティー論、そして新制度派組織理論という組織理論の4つの類型を概説した上で、社会化過剰の組織観と社会化過少の組織観どちらにも陥ることなく、個人(ミクロ)と制度(マクロ)の両方向の影響関係を統一的に考慮することの重要性が説かれています。その手掛りとして「道具箱としての文化」「行為戦略」「制度固有のロジック」という考え方を取り入れた「複合戦略モデル」が提示されています。

複数の組織理論が豊富な引用や事例をもとに平易な文章で整理されており、組織理論の理解を包括的に深めることができました。経営学的な視点から書かれた組織理論とは異なるアプローチが小生にとっては大変新鮮でした。

成長機会が稀少となった今日のビジネス環境において、新規事業等の革新が功を奏せず、停滞を余儀なくされることも多い。本書は、組織理論に関する学術的立場で書かれているが、私たち企業の実務家が、自組織から一旦距離を置いて、これまで信じてきた自社の価値観や信念（企業文化）を見つめ直してみることの有効性を示唆している。これまでの成長と成功を遂げてきた過去の組織における価値や信念は、企業内の組織を蝕む危険性さえ持つと言う。本書における「企業文化論」「組織文化論」等に対する批判的な考察は、身に沁みて身近で、決して他人事でない。私たち実務家に重大な警鐘を鳴らすと共に、管理のパラダイム転換を求めている。
