　時は19世紀末、人類未到の地であった北極
（北緯84度以降）を競売に掛けた亜米利加合衆国。
見事落札したのは米国政府の代理人となった「北極
実用化協会」。しかしその実態は月世界旅行を企てた
「大砲クラブ（同著者による『月世界に行く』の
主人公達）」だった。

　彼らは思いもよらぬ方法で北極の開発に取り組む
のだが……

　これ以上はネタバレになるので書きませんが
SFにとって必要な「もっともらしい嘘をつく」
ことには成功をしております。
（きちんと学者に作中での理論が成り立つか
どうかも検証を依頼しているのだ）
　
・彼らの思いついた方法とはどんな物か？
　（タイトルがヒント！）
・その方法をどうやって実現するのか？
・北極を落札した真の狙いは？

　これだけでもわくわくするというもの。
ただ、SF的な部分が強く、人物描写はかなり
淡泊になっております。
（SFと言えども、やはり「人」無しでは
成り立たないと思うのです）

　SFの古典として一読してみるには良いかと
思いますが、同じヴェルヌものでも、お薦め度は
（他のメジャーな作品と比べて）一歩下がります。

北極を競売にかける、という冒頭のエピソードは19世紀末という
北緯83度以上に到達した人がいない、という時代を感じさせます。
従って北極に陸地があるのかないのか、ということも分かっていないのです。

それを落札したのが、アメリカ政府の代理として潜り込んだ
『月世界探検』のメンバーたち
（本作の前作に当たる同書を読んでないので詳しくは知りませんが）。
世界中から石炭の発掘をエサに巻き上げた金で、
地軸の23．4度の傾きをゼロにする、というとんでもない計画を実行します。

口径27メートル、砲身600メートル、砲弾18万トンもの大砲を
どうやって作ったのか、というところは、
しっかりとハードSF的ともいえる解決がなされているのには関心しました。

とは言え、最後まで読み終えてからの結論を言えば、
本作は昔としては長編の分量にしてはあまりにも脱力系なオチでした。
それがまた、味になっているのですが…。
