油ののりきった中期の作品。

「早まった埋葬」や「モルグ街の殺人」など、有名作品が収録されいてかなりおいしい一冊です。
初期の頃の皮肉と気の作風の中に、中年くさいユーモアが混ざってきて怖くておもろくて読みやすい。
ポオ初心者にもオススメです。

子供のころ，「モルグ街の殺人」を読んでびっくりしたの覚えてます。犯人に「え!?」って。推理小説を読みなれていなかった昔の人はもっとびっくりしたんじゃないでしょうか。

有名どころはおいておくとして、僕のお気に入りは，「妖精の島」と「赤死病の仮面」。
特に「妖精の島」は，風景描写が美しく、ポオの自然に対する価値観が出います。

　本書には、世界最初の推理小説といわれる『モルグ街の殺人』、『エレオノーラ』のような幻想的な小説、『眼鏡』のようなユーモア小説など、エドガー・アラン・ポオの多様な小説が収録されている。
　ポオの小説には「論理｣と「幻想」という一見相反するように見える2つのものが内在している。しかし、この2つが分裂しているわけではなく、共存している。『催眠術の啓示』などを読んでいると、この2つはもともと強く結びついているものなのではないか、と感じてしまう。だからこそ、『不思議の国のアリス』の著者キャロルは数学者であり、シャーロック・ホームズの生みの親ドイルはオカルトマニアであったのではないだろうか。
　本書はポオの魅力を堪能できる素晴らしい短編集である。

はやり有名な作品が魅力的で面白そうに見えるが、ここは「妖精の森」「催眠術の啓示」或いは「エレオノーラ」を読んでいただきたい。
「妖精の島」ではそのファンシーさに驚かされる、またそこで後の作品「催眠術の啓示」の宇宙観が一部出ているので、共に合わせて読んでも面白い。エレオノーラはもっともポオ的だ。
そしと半ばの「庭園」ではポオの美的主張と詩人としてのプライドが垣間見えるように思う。
初めて買ったポオの全集がこれなので満足だった。
