　表紙に「ジュール・ベルヌの生涯にわたるテーマが集約された傑作」と書かれている割にはあまり有名でないと思われるこの作品。「海底２万マイル」や「１５少年漂流記」に比べると「動く都市そのものに乗って旅をする」という設定は地味だったと思わざるを得ません。しかし島の管理の方法や人々の生活の描写は海上を航海する巨大な人工島に存在感を与えており、SF小説の祖の力量を感じさせられました。
　物語もロマンスあり、冒険＆スペクタクルありの盛り沢山な内容となっています。荒唐無稽すぎると言えないこともないのですが、ヴェルヌ作品を読みなれてそれがどんなものであるか知っている人なら、内容をすんなりと受け止め楽しめると思います。

なんだか、ミスマッチのような気もするが・・・。さしてアイデアのある作品とは思えなかった。島が移動するだけの展開で、最後の方までなんだか単調な展開だった。盛り上がる場面もとくに思いつかなかったし、本当に晩年の傑作なのかと？疑いたくなった。
