現代の宇宙開発にも多大な影響を与えたと言われている、ヴェルヌの傑作です。本書では正確な原典を用いたうえで、時代背景や作者の意図を注釈付きで書かれています。上下二段組で、上段に原典からの翻訳、下段に膨大な脚注と言う構成で、ときに脚注の方が長くなるぐらいです。

ストーリー自体は有名な話で、続編の「月世界探検」などに引き継がれるのですが、その想像力は感心します。どの程度感心するかというと、記述されていることが荒唐無稽ではなく、今や常識と言える内容が含まれているからです。それが「本作品が後の宇宙開発に影響を与えた」と言われている理由です。

脚注では、主人公達の属する大砲クラブの大砲にまつわる歴史から、当時の技術や風俗、舞台となっている土地の当時と現状の比!較、当時の天文学的な常識と現在のそれとの比較などが詳細に書かれています。また、登場人物の性格付けに関する分析や、ヴェルヌの他の著作との共通点などにも踏み込んでいます。

全体と通すと、怖いもの知らずの挑戦者・アメリカ人の直情径行的な行動がやけに皮肉っぽく描かれていますが、現実の宇宙開発では結局そのひたむきさが勝利を収めていることを考えると、ここにも真実の予言があると言えます。
