『から騒ぎ』の面白さは、「結婚なんかするもんか」とツッパリ合う男女のウィット合戦にある。ベネディックとビアトリスは、「君と僕は頭が切れすぎて穏やかに愛を打ち明けあうのは無理だね」(p172)という突っ張りライバル。だが、周りが陰謀を巡らして、まったく虚偽の情報を二人に注入する。ビアトリスには、「ベネディックは密かに貴女に恋焦がれている」と、またベネディックには、「ビアトリスは実は貴方を深く愛している」と。この罠に騙された二人は、まさかの恋に陥るのだが、今までのツッパリが恥ずかしいのとプライドが高いので、なかなか率直な愛の告白ができない。今回の松岡氏の新訳は、自然なリズムをもつ日本語がとても美しい。愛に目覚めたビアトリスの独白を(第３幕第１場)、既訳と比べてみよう。(坪内逍遥訳)「ぢゃ、ベネディックさん、たんと愛して下さい、わたし其お報いに此荒い気性をあなたの深切な、其お手に合ふように馴らしますから」。(福田恒存訳)「ベネディック、私を愛して、きっとお返しは致します、この激しい心を、あなたの優しいお手に馴らしましょう」。(松岡和子訳)「ベネディック、愛し続けて、私もお返しします、この野生の心を手なづけ、愛のこもったあなたの手にゆだねます」。どうです、現代の自立した女性が言ってもおかしくない愛の告白でしょう。
