吉田健一は吉田茂首相の長男でありながら､生臭い政治や実業の世界とは全く無縁の文学の世界に身を置き、終生酒と英米文学を愛し、馬鹿と野暮を嫌った人生の達人です。
戦後間もない頃から書き始めた評論や小説なども良いのですが、こうしたエッセイをまとめた作品集は氏の人となりを浮き彫りにしてくれます。

今､凡百の食味評論家なる人たちが書きなぐる駄文と昭和半ばの食糧事情で綴られたこのエッセイを読み比べると、人生の素養の多寡が文章にあらわれてきます。
酒呑みの方､素晴らしい酒呑みで人生の達人の洒脱な日々を受け止めてみませんか？

　タイトルだけ見ると、イギリス文学者にして、「グルメ」ではなく食を楽しむ紳士の酒にまつわる失敗談かと思って手にしたが、差にあらず。父親が首相をしていた戦後の精神的風土の歪みに対する論評などが、政治と無関係に語られている。
　･･･と思ったら、やはりでてきます。酒と、旅の楽しい話が。酒についての様々な考察を展開されており、酒飲みとしては、嬉しい限りではある。
　ただ、全体としては、バランスが少しよくないなと感じた次第。で、☆１つ減点。
