本著は、著名な文化論などの論文の索引を見ると
必ずと言っていいほど登場する名著である。

日本人ではない著者が冷静に日本人を観察しており
違った視点から見た日本人の姿には興味を持たざるをえない。

グローバル化の進展、円高などにより
日本人以外の方々との交流が急増しているが
本著は、彼らとコミュニケーションを取る上でも

まず読んでおきたい一冊である。

出版元の社会思想社が残念なこととなり
本著のような名著が
今後とも広く読まれ続けていくのかどうかが気がかりである。

日本人の民族性を、文化人類学を援用して分析し、その行動の裏側にある心理的な裏づけについて述べている大作です。最も印象的かつ衝撃的であったのは、日本人にとって空気のように当たり前で自然に思ったり感じたりしている、恩、義理、人情、恥、などの概念がアメリカには無い、というところです。そして更にそれら概念の心理的な構造を明らかにし、アメリカ人はそんなものが無くても、普通に暮らして行けているのに、日本人はそれら概念に生まれつき苦しめられている、という点です。もちろん２１世紀の、特に都会では、それら概念が希薄になりつつあるとはいえ、やはり日本人同士のコミュニケーションの現場では、意識にのぼらない意識として常識化していることを考えれば、本書の存在意義は今も絶大だと思います。また、出てくる事例が古い（第二次大戦前の日本の状態である）ので、ある意味昔の日本の文化的な歴史を知る本としての意味もあります。

余談ですが、本書は通常、日本人論あるいは日本社会論を著した本、と捉えられていると思いますが、私がこの本で最も刺激的で楽しかったのは、日本以外の文化（主に著者の国であるアメリカ）について、断片的ながらもその様子を知ることが出来たことでした。

本著は、誰もが一度は名前を聞いたことがあるような名著であり
後世に残したい傑作と言える。

著者が外人という第三者的な立場であったこともあり
冷静に的確に日本人について分析が施されている。

日本文化を語る上で、欠かせない論文であることは
長年にわたり数々の書籍に本著が
引用され続けていることからも明白である。

出版社が残念なこととなったが、
近いうちに再販され、
広く読まれ続けることを願ってやまない。
