著者が「文化鳥類学」というユニークな分野の本を読んで一番思ったのは、「本当に好きなことやものについて書かれた文章は、美しく力がある、ということだ」。奥野信太郎の文章を評して「ほんの少し前まで、日本語はもっと木目の細かなものだった」と。本書に登場する本はジャンルも様々だが、一貫して格調ある文章にこだわって選ばれている。いわゆる名文家ということではなく、著者の生き方が選ぶ言葉や文章のリズムに表れるような文章を求めて、小説もエッセイも伝記も、音楽も映画も落語も歴史もSFも受け止める。『考えるヒット』の批評眼、文章力は、こういう読書遍歴からうまれたということだ。エッジの効いたミュージシャンが、古きよき日本語を愛し、その美徳の喪失を嘆く。驚くほど正統な書評集。

週刊誌のJPOP批評しか著者のまとまった文章を読んだことがなかったので、正直言っていい意味で驚きました。中学生で「話の特集」を買ったエピソードなど著者の本に対する姿勢？が書評の間に垣間見えてなかなか味があります。「レイブ」だの「トランス」だのたまに出てくる単語がなかったらとてもミュージシャンの書いた書評だとは思わないでしょう。

確かに取り上げる本には「読んでみたい！」と思わせるものが少ないですが、それはそれでOK。

ここで書かれる日本語とビブラストーンでの過激な歌詞とのギャップがこれまた面白いです。

マニアックな本を刊行し続けている、国書刊行会の某氏の編集ワークだが・・。
彼が編集した本ということで「期待度を上げすぎていた」分、イマイチという読後感。近田春夫の書評文体は悪くはないのだが、取上げられる本に、あまり驚きがない・・。

たとえば、白洲正子の名前がこの本の中には何回が出てくるが・・。それは近田が自分で発見したものではなくて、連載時の担当編集者の三宅菊子（anan創刊時のメイン・ライター）の薦めによるもの。近年の「白洲正子神格化」にウンザリしている者としては・・。「お勉強」めいたこのヤリトリに、ちょっとゲンナリしてしまう。

なお、連載時には毎回「挿絵」としてついていた故・渡辺和博による、取上げられた作家についてのイラスト（彼が死去するまで分）が、本のカバー・見返し・表紙に「完全収録」されているのは嬉しかった。（申し訳ないが・・近田の文章よりも、渡辺の絵（＋コメント）のほうが面白い・・）

とはいえ、近田春夫がフィリップ・K・ディックの大ファンだというのは、この本で始めて知った。この本の中でも二冊が取上げられている。ちなみに、山形浩生にその訳文を罵倒されている飯田隆昭の訳を、近田は「自分的にはディックにはこの人が最適」と評している。確かに、明解な訳文より、ぎこちない文体のほうがディック的には「クル」ものがあるかもね。

細かいことを指摘すると・・。マイケル・ペイリンの「ヘミングウェイ・アドベンチャー」という本を紹介しているのだが、「著者はイギリスの作家」とだけある。
この人があのモンティ・パイソンの一員だってことは、たとえ近田が知らなくとも、その本の訳者あとがきとかに書いてあると思うのだが・・・。
