少年時代を上海ですごしたバラードの半自伝小説。（ちなみに彼はユダヤ人ではない）。イギリス人であった彼は、日本軍の収容所に収容され、家族と別れて、そこで暮らすことになる。
といっても、普通の小説ではない。
死のイメージに満ちた、メタファーまみれのバラード文で小説は展開されるため、戦争の悲惨さも、家族離散の悲しみも感じられない。
そして、エキゾチックで魅力に満ちた退廃的な「破滅的世界」、日本軍の戦闘機のテクノロジーに魅される主人公。その後のバラードの小説の原点は、ほぼ、この上海時代にあったといってよい。

なお、他のレビュアーの方が「文章が分かりにくい」「主人公が受身」などと不満を書かれているが・・。

バラードの小説はそもそもすべて、普通小説であろうと、SF小説であろうと、主人公が体験する世界はまるで”オブジェ"のように、独特の比喩を用いた文体で描かれ、主人公はその世界に流され、主体的な判断をしようとしない。
そういう小説がお嫌いな方は、バラードを読まないほうがいい。

思うに、彼の諸々の作品、その背後に流れる一貫した無機的、鉱物的とも思える荒廃した「心象風景」的イメージは、おそらく彼が幼少期に過ごした上海での収容所体験を核とした「原体験」にあるのではなかろうか。。。

自伝的作品、本作『太陽の帝国』には当時の赤裸々な状況が描かれている。
これがそのまま体験的事実を記したものであるかどうか判別できないものの、死と荒廃、まさしくアポカリプティックな場面が展開してゆく。
しかも感情的な要素を抑えて淡々と――である。
死−死体。腐敗。荒廃。収容所。――それから、広島や長崎の間接的な心象体験。
エキゾチックかつ退廃に満ちた破滅的世界。

そして、この作品には、マシーンとしての日本製戦闘機への「憧憬」さえ添えられている。

「終末からの視点」と「テクノロジカル・ランドスケープ」。。。

もしこの体験が事実であるとすれば、後のバラード作品世界の原点をたどればこの時期にいたるのであろうとさえ言えるのではなかろうか。。。

作品に対する批評は好悪交々であろうが、私はこれを敢えてバラードの特異な作品世界、そして、作風を探る上でも隠れた名著と評したい。

懐かしい本です。15年以上前でしょうか、書店に注文して来るのが長いこと長いこと。ようやく手にした時は手に汗が滲んでました。SF作家のJ.Gバラードと映画監督スティーブン・スピルバーグとのカップリングをどれだけ楽しみにしていた事か。で、本ですが「玉砕」でした。ユダヤ人作家バラード自身の半自伝小説ですが、展開が怠い事。そして難解でクドい言い回しに辟易しながら読んだのを覚えてます。翻訳がマズいのか、原書を読んでないのでわかりませんが、国書刊行会の本はちょっと訳に癖があり過ぎ。でもそういうばっかり手掛けてるからでしょうが、面白そうな本にありついて、期待を裏切られると、2度と買うか！となるものですが、ここの出版社のは何故か手が出てしまいます。映画もイマイチでした。
