本書は『水木しげるのカランコロン』の再編集本です。『カランコロン』所収のエッセイのうち、対談・インタビューすべて（計１３）と一部のエッセイ（計２５）、マンガ（計２）をはずし、新たに１９のエッセイを加え二分冊にしたものが、本書と『なまけものになりたい』です。

本書に新たに追加されたエッセイは１２編で、巻末には池上遼一先生と著者との談話があとがき対談として収録されています（下記参照）。つげ義春氏と筆者との交遊や、つげ氏が「紅い花」の主人公の名前が思い浮かばなくて水木プロのソファで寝っ転がって考えていたなど、池上先生は興味深い話をされています。

あと、水木先生が「白土三平は生きてるわけ？」とたずね、池上先生が「存命です」と答えるくだりを読めただけでも、本書を手にした価値があったかなと思いました。

追加エッセイの数が『なまけもの』より多いこと、水木先生の対談が収録されていることを重視される方は、まずこちらを読まれることをおすすめします。
