4.0 out of 5 stars 人間の複雑な心理が渦巻く街の相貌！―牛尾刑事の鋭敏な推理は未完？, 2009/7/26
　　森村作品にはタイトルが一文字のものがある。『街』もそうだが、『駅』、『窓』、『路』など。「言葉」に託された物語を紡いでゆく手腕の凄さは本書でも遺憾なく発揮されている。容疑者が絞り込まれ、読者も「これで決まりか」と思っていると、更に＜意外性の展開＞が加味され意表を突く。今回の事件では被害者の数も多く、それだけに犯人候補の包囲網がじわじわと狭まってゆくのだが、単純な「落とし所」は森村氏には似合わない。初版は1989年で今から20年前の作品。新宿署の牛尾刑事の事件簿と称してよいが、それ以降の彼の卓抜した推察力を知っている人間からすれば、本書における彼の活躍は「まだまだ」だろう。牛尾刑事の真骨頂を拝めるのは先だ。

　　率直にいって本書は、森村氏の作品にしては珍しくあまりインパクトを感じることがなかった。最終的に暴かれる犯人も「意外性」というより、やや「唐突」という印象が拭えないし、事件の展開性にも「切れ」というか、「スリリングさ」が欠けているのではないか。最初に登場する女性の「凋落ぶり」にも「強引さ」を見出す。「街」というタイトルがもつ本書にどんな意味をもつのか、よく分からない。最終的に牛尾は、「複雑な事件だったが、犯人はみな自ら墓穴を掘った形になったね」（330頁）と総括したが、締め方に「意外性」はあったものの、何となく「もやもや感」が残る。簡単に言えば、「歯切れが悪い」ということだ。「超高層ビルがこの街で死んだ者の墓石にみえますよ」（同）という牛尾の同僚・大上の言葉は心に響くものがあったが。

　　牛尾刑事は前作『駅』でかけがえのない一人息子を失い、本書でもそれを回顧するシーンがしばしば登場する。彼と同じくシリーズ化されている棟居刑事も似たような境遇の持ち主である。犯罪者を孤独に追う刑事の背中には重い十字架が背負わされているのか。初期の牛尾刑事の作品を読めたことは1つの収穫であったと思う。
