著者、フレッド・アラン・ウルフは、世界的な量子物理学者であると共に、一般向けに最も分りやすい量子力学の本を書くことでも有名です。
ウルフは幼い頃の神秘体験が量子物理学の研究の道に進ませたという変わった学者です。
本書でも、シャーマン（巫師・祈祷師）の指導の下に、アヤワスカという強力な幻覚剤を使用した時の超常的な体験や、著名な能力開発指導者のアンソニー・ロビンズが指導する炭火の上の火渡り等を自ら体験し、科学者として、特に専門の量子物理学により考察しています。
不思議な現象に対するウルフの態度は冷静で、理論のこじつけや、その逆の理論の捻じ曲げもなく、好感が持てると思います。
「神々の指紋」などで有名なグラハム・ハンコックも幻覚剤の使用により異次元との交流が可能となることを主張しています。しかし、ウルフは量子力学における、意識と現象との関連に対応させて洗練した説明を行うことで、納得とまではいかないかもしれませんが、一般的な感覚とは異なる世界の可能性について意識を向けさせてくれるはずです。
不思議な精神世界に興味のある人はもちろんですが、そうでない方にも面白く有益な本であると思います。
