内田康夫といえば、浅見光彦があまりにも有名である。最近の内田作品はほぼ全部といって良いほど、浅見の活躍ばかりである。作中「軽井沢のセンセ」がでるため愛着があるのか（？）、ファンクラブまで出来ている永遠の３３歳の浅見人気の影響か、内田＝浅見という定理ができていると思ってしまうほど、浅見光彦ばかりであるが、実は内田のデビュー作「死者の木霊」は竹村岩男という長野県警の一巡査部長が執念で事件を解決に導く名作である。
本作ではその竹村岩男が長野県内で発生した連続殺人事件を持ち前の緻密な捜査と勘で解決する推理小説であるが、鍵となるのはなんと長野県の県の歌である。普通、自分が住んでいる都道府県の歌というのは、よほどのことがないかぎり、知らないか、知っていても諳（そら）んじるほど思い入れはないのが普通と思うが、長野県では皆が愛唱できるほど膾炙しているという点に内田の長野県民としてのプライドを見たような気がする。その県の歌のタイトルが「信濃の国」である。その歌が導く結末は、あまりにもドラマティックであり、私の好きな作品の一つである。
長野県は冬季オリンピック開催の地であり、同業作家の田中康夫が知事であり、地理的には海に接していないが多くの県に接しており、なにかとメディアに登場する県である。そういった県の定性要因がエッセンスとしてちりばめられていて物語に奥行きを与えている。長野県民だけでなく、浅見ファンにも是非一読をお勧めする。
ちなみに私は３３歳の広島県民である。
