中国四大奇書の一つ『紅楼夢』の登場人物や舞台はそのままに、
ミステリーの要素を加味した幻想的な作品です。
賈宝玉と頼尚栄を探偵役として、本来の物語では殺されるはずの
ない人たちが次々と殺されていき、その度に奇怪なことが起きます。
文体が中国風で、すごく雰囲気が出てました。
全てが解決し終わると、なるほど、と納得できる結末でしたが、
ラストの部分は、なんだかぼんやりとしてしまいました。
中国の名前に馴染みが薄いので、覚えるのが大変でしたが、最初から
最後まで楽しめる作品でした。

皇帝の妃となった賈家の長女・元春は、彼女が里帰りした際につくられた
人工楽園を〈大観園〉と名づけ、賈家にいる娘たちにそこに移り住むように
命じた。それと同時に、弟の宝玉には、〈大観園〉の守護役を申し渡す。

やがて〈大観園〉で、不可解な連続見立て殺人が起こり……。



中国古典の物語世界を舞台とした本作は、作者による問題提起や告発を盛り込んだ
一種の寓話であるため、普通のミステリを期待する向きには肩透かしかもしれません。

個々の殺人事件のトリックも小粒で、あくまで
全体の仕掛けに奉仕するパーツに過ぎません。


作者は、本作において、本来の意味での“メタ・ミステリ”（「その作品が探偵小説である
こと自体が探偵小説としての仕掛けにつながっている作品」）を志向したと書いています。

その目論見は成功していると思いますし、『紅楼夢』が題材に選ばれた必然性も理解できます。


ただ、個人的には、いまひとつ物語自体に入り込めませんでした。

芦辺拓は、『明智小五郎対金田一耕助』ではじめて作品を読みました。その作品でも横溝正史や江戸川乱歩の作品世界を自家薬籠中のものにしていましたが、この『紅楼夢の殺人』も、かの中国の古典を活かしつつ、ミステリーの世界に作っています。特に宝玉がいい味を出しています。原作は岩波文庫で、学生時代に１度読んだだけなので、どこまでがそれでどこからが『紅楼夢の殺人』なのか、記憶の中で混然としてしまいました。
本格とはいえませんが、とにかく面白く一気に読めます。
