五篇の短編集であるが、それぞれ密度の濃い作品ばかりだ。
それぞれの作品は、どちらかと言えば軽いものから、重いものへと配列されている。

最も重い内容の「レクイエム」は、最後に配されている。
この内容から、著者の長編「弥勒」の凝縮版の様な印象を受けた。
ただ、ここで話題にされるのは、太平洋戦争末期時代の事であり、
生半可に「極限状況」という言葉を使ってはならないという雰囲気だ。

「人としてしてはならない事」というのは、殺人でも、強姦でもなかった。
それは、人食の事を言っているのかな？と当初思ったが、実質的には違っていた。

「レクイエム」には、物語としての起承転結はある。
しかし、この物語には、取り返しがつかず、終わりは無いとも言える。

深い悲しみが後遺する。
強く心を揺さぶられる。

読者を不思議な幻想の世界へ誘う短編集です。
現代社会に潜む、落とし穴というべきものが書かれています。
特に良かったのは、表題作の「レクイエム」。
ジャングルの中で悲惨だった兵隊の姿が眼に浮かぶようです。
篠田さんの作品は、本当に主人公の心理描写が素晴らしいです。
読み終わった後、う~ん面白かった！と唸ってしまいました。

人の心の中にあるひずみ。それが見せる幻なのか？作者の描く世界は
とても不思議な世界だった。逝く者と見送る者、心のすき間を埋め
ようとする者、人生を振り返る者、語られる悲惨な過去の話に耳を
傾ける者。そのどれもが悲哀に満ちている。特に表題作の「レクイ
エム」は読んでいて切なかった。自分が生きるためにしたことは、
結局自分の人生を狂わせていく。他に選択肢などあるはずもなかった
のに。読後、泣きたくなるような思いが心に残った。
