　著者の代表作である名著「奇想の系譜」（ISBN9784480088772）で紹介した岩佐又兵衛を、今度は新書一冊を全て使い、カラー図版たっぷりで読みやすい文章で仕上げています。

　本の帯には若冲の前に又兵衛とありますが、強烈な個性を感じさせる絵は意外に少なく、どちらかというと当時の本流である狩野派や土佐派風の作品も多い事が分かります。もちろん浮世絵の原型である作品や有名な長編絵巻では彼独特の個性が感じられ、描ける絵の守備範囲の広さに感心させられます。

　索引も充実しており、このレベルの入門書が気軽に買える新書で発行されたことは高く評価できると思います。

　表紙に載せられている作品の迫力に惹かれて購入したが、期待に違わぬ内容で引き込まれた。
　その表紙の作品は「山中常盤」。古浄瑠璃に題を撮った、義経の母・常盤の悲劇と息子によるすさまじい復讐の物語だ。胸に剣を突き立てられ息絶える常盤や、義経に首をはねられたり真っ二つにされる盗賊たちのありさまは、表紙以外に口絵などにも収録され、くぎ付けになってしまった。
　この作品を描いた人物こそが岩佐又兵衛。父は戦国の城主だが、父が信長に背いたため幼くして母を殺され、自らは絵師となったという、「山中常盤」を地でいくような数奇な人生を送った人物だ。この作品以外に、当時の風俗なども綿密に描いており、そのため菱川師宣に先駆けて「浮世絵をつくった男」とも評される。
　さまざまな形で人間の情念を描き、何世紀もの時を経た今でさえ見るものの情念を揺さぶる男の世界に導く入門書としてお奨めする。

5.0 out of 5 stars 図録が多く、物語が随所に出てくるので読みやすい, 2008/7/2
美術の解説書というとなにか敷居が高そうだが、
図録が多くしかもすべてカラーで掲載されており、文体も平易なため肩肘張らずによむことができた。
岩佐又兵衛の生い立ちから始まり、又兵衛風絵巻の解説、そして最後に又兵衛は浮世絵の創始者といえるか、の考察までとても興味深く読むことができた。

この本が読みやすいのは、廻国道之記に沿って福井から京都を通り江戸に出るまでの旅日記を通じて又兵衛の生涯を紹介したり、
山中常盤物語絵巻、堀江物語絵巻の内容を紹介したり、と単なる解説書ではなく、昔話の雰囲気が随所に出てくるからだと思う。

浮世＝憂き世。
戦国の世が終わり、徳川の平和が訪れるのはもちろん良いことだが、あまりの平和には憂き世を覚える。
このご時勢だからこそ、本書で憂き世を吹き飛ばしてみては。
現代の漫画に通ずるものがあり、他国に誇れる自国の文化はやはり脈々と受け継がれているものだと感じた。
