速水晃一と清川吾郎。性格も剣筋もまったく異なる二人が、ほとんど交互に別々に物語を進めていきながら、最後の対決へと盛り上がっていく。
同時に、この二人は部の主将としてチームを育てる方法も、異なっていく。剣道は、一人と一人の対決であるだけでなく、チームとチームの対決でもある。
そこに、スポーツではなく、真剣の世界を持ち込むのが高階だ。
剣道の世界で終わるのではなく、その外にある医療の世界を体感させる。臨床というのは、つまり、真剣勝負に他ならない。特に、手術室の中では。
対決する前から逃げ出すような性根や、しがらみに雁字搦めになって本領を発揮することをためらうような性根では、一瞬の好機を掴み、奇跡を引き寄せることはできない。
治療の現場で真剣になれないような医師はいらない。それが高階の発するメッセージではないだろうか。
その高階という先輩に、二人の天才が本物として磨き上げられる過程を描いたのが、この本だと言えよう。成長物語として単独で読んでも面白いだろうが、やはり他の既刊とあわせて読むほうが魅力倍増だと思った。

　皆様ご存じのジェネラル・ルージュこと速水晃一氏の、剣道一筋だった学生時代の物語。田口先生も島津医師も、ちょこっと登場する。時期は「ブラック・ペアン」と完璧に重なっているが、今回、医療的な要素は皆無と言っていい。ひたすら剣道の話が続くので、退屈する向きもあるかもしれない。
　ただ、高階先生がかなりの頻度で登場するので、個人的には美味しかった。剣道の有段者で、帝華大で剣道部顧問をやり、その後、東城大の剣道部顧問になるあたり、タヌキの本領が発揮されていて楽しい。やっぱりカッコいいよなー、この人。「委細かまわず、森羅万象をぶった斬れ」か。うーん、若いころに言われてみたかった。
　「ジーン・ワルツ」を読んでいれば面白さは幾分増すが、未読でも別に支障はないと思う。

速水・清川の青春時代♪
そこに高階先生が絡んで、いやはやなんとも、
かわいいったらありゃしないです。
シリーズをずっと読んでらっしゃると、
一粒で二度どころか、十回くらいおいしいですが、
これだけ読んでも、十分楽しめると思います。
医学的なことは、何も出てこないので、
物足りない方も多いと思いますが、
医学生の青春物語として楽しめば。と思いますよ。

しかし、今時、こんな純な医学生いるのか？（笑
