リチャード・マシスンの傑作短篇を読めるだけでも驚きなのに、それが小鷹信光の古びることのない名訳で読める、この一編のためだけで買う価値は十分にあるけれど、本書の衝撃作は（ホラー通にはあまりに有名かもしれないのだが）アーカム・ハウス社を創立したオーガスト・ダーレス著の「淋しい場所」。翻訳は永井淳（「キャリー」「呪われた町」「デッド・ゾーン」などの翻訳家）。安心できますよね？
「淋しい場所」についてすこし。
これはお使いを頼まれた子供が、“淋しい場所”にまつわるストーリイを創作しているうちに、それが本当のことになってしまうという、ぞっとするような怪奇譚。傾向としては読んでいて震えるというより、「わかるよ、それ」と言いたくなるような内容。
この短篇を読めばクライモリをとおることが、本当にコワくなってしまうでしょう。
なお、本書は名アンソロジイとはいえ、ホラー・アンソロジイ。２００５年に発行され増刷もかかっていないため、在庫希少だろう。
早めに手に入れる必要がある。
数多のホラー・アンソロジイのなかでも、本書は傑出していると言っていい。
おまけではあるが、本書にはフィーリップ・K・ディークの佳作が収録されている。お買い得な短篇集である。

子供の頃読んだ、ジェイコブズの「猿の手」は衝撃的だった。でも、これは、幻想と怪奇のアンソロジーだけど、全然、怖くはない。大人になったら、怖さの質も変わるのだろうか。それとも怖さを売りにしてるわけではないのかな。暇つぶしには、適当だけど。
