村上春樹、初期の珠玉の短編集。特に「最後の午後の芝生」は青春の一場面を、断面的にさっと切りとったような爽快さともの悲しさが感じられる、彼ならではの傑作ではないかと思います。感情を抑制しつつ、押さえられているが故により印象的な情感を簡潔にクロスさせながら物語は進行していきます。

実際に読んだのは、もう二十年近く前ですが、(なんと毎年)夏がくると読みたくなり、そのたびに読み返しています。
本来的に彼の(少なくともこの頃は)文章に向かう能力というものは、歯切れの良い短編向きだったのではないか、という感を強く持つ代表作。

この本は､(個人的に思っているのですが）孤独を描くことが上手な村上春樹の初期の短編集です。進化する作家(おじさまといっていい年になるのだろうにとてもそうはいえない､恐れ多くて）ムラカミですから、もちろん最近の作品のほうがなかされている気はします。同じ昔の作品でも「蛍」のほうが私は好きですし。
でも、今はどこにいるのかも判らない友人や､もしかしたらもっとかかわりあえたかもしれない同級生､本当に好きだったのに実在さえ怪しくなった初恋の人とか、ただ電車の中で隣り合って言葉を交わした人でも。たくさんの引っ越しを繰り返して大人になった私には､他生の縁があったはずなのに､もう会うことはきっとないと判ってしまっている人々がいます。そして､そういう人は、きっと誰にでもいます。その人たちと別れるという必然を､忘れないでいて､時々思い出すように､時間と空間を隔てた相手に対する､生きていれば積み重ねざるを得ない痛みがあると思います。人と関わりあうからこその孤独があると思います。中国行きのスロウボートは､その痛みをゆりおこすような気がします。そして、だからこそ、普遍的なテーマであるこの孤独をこれからも抱えていく意思を再確認できるのです。
だから、できれば、自分にもある別れの積み重ねを意識して読んでください。

必ず読みかえしてしまう短編集です。
特に「午後の最後の芝生」は私の中の夏そのものです。
登場する人物のすべてが、夏の寂しさに溢れていて、大好きな一編です。
