いつのまにか一緒に暮らし始めた猫（ノラ）が、ある日突然消えてしまった。
そのたったひとつの出来事が、いかに大きな悲しみを生み、今日を変えてしまうか。
何をしていても、何処にいても、些細なきっかけで思い出し、涙が出る。
その繰り返しが延々と綴られています。
そしてその悲しみを癒すために現れたようなもう一匹の猫（クル）。

「ただ一つの心遣りは、帰つてこなくなったノラと違つて、してやり度いだけの事はみんなしてやつた。クルがしたがつた事はみなさせてやつた。」

この一節を読むだけでも、作者がどんなに真剣な愛情を注いだか想像できると思います。
「ノラや」「クルや」と呼びかける作者の声が聞こえてくる一冊。

雑誌などの色々な猫特集では必ず挙げられ、猫好きなら一度は読むべし、と言う名著。内田百間ならではの文章が文句無しに心を揺さぶります。「合点のいかない顔で抱かれていたノラ」というくだりが大好きです。ノラはどこへいったのでせう。

ノラとクルツを巡る騒動は、「おかしくて笑える」というよりも「切なくて悲しいのに読後感が暖かい」というほうがふさわしいのではなかろうか。個人的には、失踪したノラ以上に、クルツのくだりが印象深い。クルツの好きなお刺身の話が急転直下で状況が一変する描写には「…あっ」と思った。

解説で引用された手紙も心温まるもので、ノラ失踪時、百鬼園先生のそばにいた人の語るエピソードも含め、最後の1ページまでよかった。旧仮名使いが、やはり合う。

百鬼園先生の人となりを味わう良著である。就寝前に読むと優しい気持ちになれる1冊。
