　ウォークマンと並ぶと言われる日本発の世界的な大発明とされる「カラオケ」の発達史をジャーナリストである著者が丹念に掘り起こしている。発明者、カラオケボックスの考案者、通信カラオケの開発者等々、よくぞここまでというくらい調べ尽くしています。日本ですっかり定着し、日本人のライフスタイルまで変えてしまったほどの大きなインパクトを持ちながら、今まで、ちゃんと顧みられることがなかった「カラオケ」の歴史に真っ向から挑んだ力作です。

本書には、「そうだったのか」とか「どうしてなんだろうという疑問への答え」になるエピソードが満載です。カラオケが好きな人、カラオケについていろいろ知りたい人、老若男女を問わず、是非、一読を。

大晦日の紅白で、羞恥心＋Paboが「陽は、また昇る」の中で

頑張れ日本　凄いぞ日本　頭のいい国　日本
インスタントラーメン　缶コーヒー　カラオケ　この国考えた

と歌っていた。そのカラオケの発明と普及を克明な取材によって明らかにしたのが本書だ。

評者の個人的な体験でも、すでに90年代半ばの上海の夜に「※拉ＯＫ」のネオンサインが林立していたし、イギリスの田舎まちのパブにおいても「Karaoke Night」(「カラオーキィ・ナイト」と読まれていた)が大人気であった。カラオケが、日本発の世界を席巻した文化であることは間違いない。(※上部が「上」、下部が「下」の漢字。発音は「ka」)

本書を読むと、カラオケの発明と普及が実に「日本的」な過程を経ていたことがよくわかる。
良かれ悪しかれ「現代日本的なるもの」をカラオケという文化が象徴している。
筆者は本書の最後において「こうした「カラオケの父たち」を訪ね歩いた筆者が驚いたのは、その誰もが極めて謙虚で、きわめて無欲なことです。」と感慨を込めて述懐している。本当に、そのとおりなのである。

読んで面白く、日本についていろいろと考えさせてくれる本。ぜひご一読されたい。

新技術は、個人の努力から形成されることが多いと聞く。
カラオケの成立においても、何人かの個人の努力の一端が、本書に記載されている。

大手企業は、試作のための費用は許可しても、製品として販売する許可はなかなかしないとお聞きします。
会社の方針と矛盾しないように、自分の作りたいものを作っていく、技術者の魂、芸術家のはしっくれの生き方を見る。
